{"id":6092,"date":"2014-11-06T15:29:42","date_gmt":"2014-11-06T14:29:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=6092"},"modified":"2014-11-06T16:13:49","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T15:13:49","slug":"dance-with-the-devil-cantiaquorum-evening-concert-to-feature-guest-narrators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2014\/11\/06\/dance-with-the-devil-cantiaquorum-evening-concert-to-feature-guest-narrators\/","title":{"rendered":"Dance with the Devil: CantiaQuorum evening concert to feature guest narrators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a sizzling lunchtime concert on Wednesday from three members of <strong>CantiaQuorum<\/strong>, our new ensemble-in-residence launches formally on <strong>Friday 14 November<\/strong> with Stravinsky&#8217;s <em>The Soldier&#8217;s Tale<\/em> and Walton&#8217;s <em>Fa\u00e7ade\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/em>and some very special guests.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday&#8217;s curtain-raising lunchtime concert\u00a0saw trumpeter Alex Caldon, violinist Alexandra Reid and pianist Matthew King in a dynamic programme, including the little-known <em>Trio<\/em> by Eric Ewazen which combined elements of rustic Copland with the energetic drive of Bernstein. Violinist Alexandra Reid demonstrated an almost balletic grace and poise in a <em>chiaroscuro<\/em> instrumental rendition of Bach&#8217;s <em>Erbarme Dich<\/em>, matched by peerless lyricism from Alex on trumpet. Matthew King then turned composer in an encore written especially for the occasion, <em>Tango<\/em>, which swaggered and sashayed\u00a0in dazzling and robust twists and turns around the players in a bewitching take on the Argentinian dance, which(quite rightly) brought the house down.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6107\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6107\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2014\/11\/CantiaQuorum_Stravinsky2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6107\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2014\/11\/CantiaQuorum_Stravinsky2-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"Click to view\" width=\"160\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2014\/11\/CantiaQuorum_Stravinsky2-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2014\/11\/CantiaQuorum_Stravinsky2.jpg 721w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click to view<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The evening concert on 14th November brings devilish entertainment as the full\u00a0ensemble will unfold Stravinsky&#8217;s\u00a0pin-sharp morality\u00a0tale\u00a0of a\u00a0soldier\u00a0who sells his\u00a0violin to the Devil in return for a book that offers visions of the future and lavish riches &#8211; but there&#8217;s a catch&#8230; And there&#8217;s a special element to the Walton, as the narrators for <em>Fa\u00e7ade<\/em>\u00a0are drawn from the local\u00a0and the University community, including\u00a0Director of Music at Canterbury Cathedral, David Flood, the Chief Executive of Canterbury City Council, Colin Carmichael<em>,<\/em> fourth-year Drama student and Music Scholar, Emma Murton and\u00a0Professor Keith Mander;\u00a0and\u00a0whom would one ask to deliver the &#8216;Scotch Rhapsody ?&#8217; Why, none other than\u00a0our lovely Music Administrator, Sophie Meikle, whose dulcet Glaswegian tones will lend extra\u00a0relish to Sitwell&#8217;s verse&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0Wednesday&#8217;s lunchtime concert\u00a0was anything to go by, the evening concert on the 14th is going to be unforgettable; and there&#8217;s even a glass of wine afterwards and an opportunity to meet the players.
