{"id":5594,"date":"2014-01-28T14:24:06","date_gmt":"2014-01-28T13:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=5594"},"modified":"2014-01-28T17:56:03","modified_gmt":"2014-01-28T16:56:03","slug":"the-arts-rejuvenating-the-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2014\/01\/28\/the-arts-rejuvenating-the-county\/","title":{"rendered":"The Arts: rejuvenating the county"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m reminded anew of <a title=\"Read article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture-professionals-network\/culture-professionals-blog\/2013\/mar\/20\/budget-culture-economic-force-kent?CMP=twt_gu\" target=\"_blank\">this article <\/a>in the <em>Guardian <\/em> some months ago about the\u00a0impact culture and the arts are having in East Kent.<\/p>\n<p>Writing last year, the Director of the Turner Contemporary Gallery, Victoria Pomeroy, states that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the arts are leading the way in raising the profile of the area as a desirable destination. From Whitstable to Folkestone, Canterbury to Dover, arts and culture are making a significant contribution to the tourism offer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5596\" alt=\"east_kent\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2014\/01\/east_kent.jpg\" width=\"228\" height=\"146\" \/>With the tourist industry bringing in &#8216;\u00a33.2bn&#8217; to the area annually, the partnership between the arts, heritage and the tourist industry is rejuvenating the county&#8217;s economic development, bringing visitors to historic and cultural attractions throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s bid for East Kent as &#8216;City of Culture,&#8217;\u00a0drawn up by collaboration across venues and organisations across\u00a0East Kent.\u00a0may not have been successful, it&#8217;s true, but it does reflect a changing mentality across the county,\u00a0triangulated in investment in iconic venues such as the recently-refurbished <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marlowetheatre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marlowe Theatre <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canterbury.co.uk\/Beaney\/\" target=\"_blank\">Beaney House of Art and Knowledge<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.turnercontemporary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Turner Contemporary<\/a> in Margate, and\u00a0the University&#8217;s\u00a0own award-winning Colyer-Fergusson Building. Since 2011,<a title=\"Revelation St Mary's\" href=\"http:\/\/revelationstmarys.co.uk\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Revelation St Mary<\/a>&#8216;s has been developing an exciting series of events at the heart of Ashford town, and there are\u00a0festivals such as the Canterbury Festival, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dealfestival.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Deal Festival<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loungeonthefarm.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lounge on the Farm<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/soundsnew.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sounds New <\/a>attracting major\u00a0performers to the\u00a0area; this year, in May, the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whit-lit.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Whitstable Literary Festival <\/a>will be launched.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a sense that professionals across these industries locally are starting to forge working relationships, building on the sense\u00a0nascent in\u00a0the City of Culture bid that there is a vibrant county-wide cultural presence that can make a significant contribution towards supporting regional economic growth.
