{"id":5430,"date":"2013-10-29T15:00:13","date_gmt":"2013-10-29T14:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=5430"},"modified":"2013-10-29T15:01:57","modified_gmt":"2013-10-29T14:01:57","slug":"no-more-walks-on-the-wild-side","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2013\/10\/29\/no-more-walks-on-the-wild-side\/","title":{"rendered":"No more walks on the wild side&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sad to learn of the death of Lou Reed, who has died at the age of 71.<\/p>\n<p>Reed was the frontman for the Velvet Underground, a group famed less for their success at the time than for their subsequent influence; as Brian Eno famously said, whilst their debut album only sold 30,000 copies and reached 197 on the Billboard chart before disappearing, &#8220;everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band.&#8221; Reed\u2019s instantly-recognisable gravelly tones on the opening <i>Vicious<\/i> are a slap in the face to the contemporaneous trippy, psychedelic rock of The Doors and Jefferson Airplane. \u00a0The group took part in multi-media events with Andy Warhol \u00a0between 1966-67, <i>Exploding Plastic Inevitable, <\/i>which took place in cities throughout America (Warhol himself having part-financed the band\u2019s debut album).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-5431\" alt=\"Reed_Transformer\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2013\/10\/Loureedtransformer-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2013\/10\/Loureedtransformer-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2013\/10\/Loureedtransformer.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>After the group disbanded in 1970, Reed continued as a solo artist, achieving critical breakthrough with Transformer (co-produced with David Bowie and Mick Ronson), which included <i>Walk on the Wild Side<\/i> in 1973.<\/p>\n<div class=\"kent-video-wrapper\"><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='474' height='297' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FwDZT8XXkFw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Listen to &#8216;Hangin&#8217; Round&#8217; at just after ten minutes.
