{"id":5337,"date":"2013-09-03T09:25:33","date_gmt":"2013-09-03T08:25:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=5337"},"modified":"2013-09-03T09:26:27","modified_gmt":"2013-09-03T08:26:27","slug":"wise-words-festival-next-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2013\/09\/03\/wise-words-festival-next-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Wise Words Festival next week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The written and spoken word is celebrated next week, as Canterbury comes alive to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisewordsfestival.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Wise Words festival.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5338\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5338\" style=\"width: 216px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5338  \" alt=\"Ian McMillan\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2013\/09\/ian-mcmillan-300x149.jpg\" width=\"216\" height=\"107\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2013\/09\/ian-mcmillan-300x149.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2013\/09\/ian-mcmillan.jpg 670w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5338\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ian McMillan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Back for a second year, running from <strong>Thursday 12 &#8211; Sunday 15 September,<\/strong> the festival sees poets such as <strong>Sir Andrew Motion<\/strong> reading from his new collection, <em>The Customs House<\/em>; the Bard of Barnsley and presenter of Radio 3&#8217;s <em>The Verb<\/em>, <strong>Ian McMillan<\/strong>, will be here next Friday, in collaboration with composer Luke Carver Goss.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the University of Kent&#8217;s poets from the School of Creative Writing will also be participating; award-winning poet <strong>Nancy Gaffield<\/strong> will be leading a workshop on poetry and the journey, in the wake of her prize-winning collection <em>Tokaido Road, <\/em>and<strong> Dorothy Lehane<\/strong> and <strong>Patricia Debney<\/strong> will also be featuring in the festival.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5339\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5339\" style=\"width: 146px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5339\" alt=\"gaffield\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2013\/09\/gaffield.jpg\" width=\"146\" height=\"220\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the road: Nancy Gaffield<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Canterbury Laureate <strong>Dan Simpson<\/strong> will be presenting a crowd-sourced poem celebrating the city, and there&#8217;s also an array of events for families and children, many of which are free to attend. Poets and story-tellers will be popping up in surprising locations around Canterbury, including in a yurt in the Franciscan Gardens; or take a punt on the river to explore myths, legends and fairy-tales in the company of <strong>Emily Parrish<\/strong>.
