Monday\u2019s evocative lunchtime concert with the Silk and Bamboo Ensemble was followed on Wednesday by an epic charity-raiser at St Edmund\u2019s School with the University Big Band and Concert Band teaming up with the school\u2019s own big band (see <a title=\"How many bands does it take to make a Zoot Suit Riot ? Three!\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2012\/04\/03\/how-many-bands-does-it-take-to-make-a-zoot-suit-riot-three\/\">previous post<\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3882\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3882\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3882\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2012\/04\/sirocco_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2012\/04\/sirocco_web.jpg 448w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2012\/04\/sirocco_web-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A fine debut: the University Sirocco Ensemble<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Continuing the busy period for music at the University, the last concert on the Friday saw the newly-founded <strong>University Sirocco Ensemble<\/strong> making its debut with terrific poise; conducted by Deputy Director of Music Dan Harding, staff, students and Music Scholars combined in a deft and delightfully refined performance of Gounod\u2019s <em>Petite Symphonie<\/em> before an enthusiastic audience at St Peter\u2019s Methodist Church, Canterbury.<\/p>\n<p>The church\u2019s rich acoustics also resounded to the <strong>University Chamber Choir<\/strong>, who presented a mixture of sacred and secular pieces, concluding with a touching rendition of <em>Lullabye<\/em> by Billy Joel, conducted by second-year Drama student and Scholar, Steph Richardson, and a mesmerising performance of Whitacre\u2019s <em>Sleep<\/em> with Dan Harding.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3884\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3884\" style=\"width: 498px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3884    \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2012\/04\/stpeters_balcony_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2012\/04\/stpeters_balcony_web.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2012\/04\/stpeters_balcony_web-300x236.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In rehearsal at St Peter&#039;s: the University Chamber Choir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our thanks to St Peter&#8217;s Methodist Church for the invitation to perform as part of their lunchtime concert series.<\/p>\n<p>An eclectic week, and a fine way to draw down the curtain on all this term\u2019s music-making.
