{"id":3650,"date":"2012-02-21T12:11:22","date_gmt":"2012-02-21T11:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=3650"},"modified":"2012-02-21T17:24:14","modified_gmt":"2012-02-21T16:24:14","slug":"still-young-at-forty-the-brodsky-quartet-celebrates-at-the-wigmore-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2012\/02\/21\/still-young-at-forty-the-brodsky-quartet-celebrates-at-the-wigmore-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"Still young at forty: the Brodsky Quartet celebrates at the Wigmore Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For anyone who can&#8217;t wait until March 23 to hear the Brodsky Quartet when it <a title=\"View event details\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/music\/whatson.html?tab=march\" target=\"_blank\">comes to the Gulbenkian Theatre<\/a>, news just lands on my desk of their fortieth anniversary concert at the Wigmore Hall in a few weeks&#8217; time, on <strong>Sunday 11 March<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In an intriguing programme, the Quartet will present their own arrangement of <a href=\"http:\/\/play.last.fm\/preview\/110685369.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">Ravel&#8217;s <em>Blues<\/em><\/a>, the third movement of a work originally falling as part of Ravel&#8217;s <em>Sonata for Violin and Piano<\/em>. Post-war American jazz was rife in Paris in the &#8216;twenties, and the second movement of Ravel&#8217;s chamber sonata revels in added-notes, &#8216;blue&#8217; notes and jazz-inflected rhythms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"kent-video-wrapper\"><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='474' height='297' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pB7lWRKGmFE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>The programme also includes Schubert&#8217;s enigmatic <em>Quartettsatz<\/em>, Puccini&#8217;s <em>Cristantemi,<\/em> Wolf&#8217;s sunlit <em>Italian Serenade<\/em>, whilst the second half continues the French theme, given over to Debussy&#8217;s majestic <a href=\"http:\/\/play.last.fm\/preview\/130586211.mp3\" target=\"_blank\"><em>String Quartet<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3662\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3662\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3662 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2012\/02\/brodsky_new_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2012\/02\/brodsky_new_web.jpg 375w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2012\/02\/brodsky_new_web-238x300.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3662\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Young at forty: the Brodsky Quartet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The concert also marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Quartet&#8217;s Wigmore Hall d\u00e9but, and shows that, at forty years old, the Quartet retains all the vigour and dynamism of its youth and its unique approach to programming. Expect a concert delivered with verve and panache, although there&#8217;s no mention about cake and candles.
