{"id":3298,"date":"2011-11-07T10:12:14","date_gmt":"2011-11-07T09:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=3298"},"modified":"2011-11-07T10:12:42","modified_gmt":"2011-11-07T09:12:42","slug":"in-the-pictures-benjamin-frith-performs-mussorgsky%e2%80%99s-mighty-epic-at-the-gulbenkian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2011\/11\/07\/in-the-pictures-benjamin-frith-performs-mussorgsky%e2%80%99s-mighty-epic-at-the-gulbenkian\/","title":{"rendered":"In the Pictures: Benjamin Frith performs Mussorgsky\u2019s mighty epic at the Gulbenkian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Acclaimed international pianist <strong>Benjamin Frith<\/strong> returns to the Gulbenkian Theatre next Monday, to perform Mussorgsky\u2019s mighty\u00a0<em>Pictures at an Exhibition<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In its original version for solo piano, this epic showpiece takes the listener on a musical odyssey through a series of paintings by the composer\u2019s friend, the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann, at an exhibition held to commemorate the artist\u2019s early death at the age of only thirty nine.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 313px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"    \" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/f\/fc\/Hartmann_Paris_Catacombs.jpg\" alt=\"Hartmann: Catacombs\" width=\"313\" height=\"234\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hartmann: Catacombs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From the menacing \u2018Hut on Fowl\u2019s Legs\u2019 to the lively \u2018Ballet of the Chicks in their shells,\u2019 finishing with the grandiose \u2018Great Gate of Kiev,\u2019 the piece represents a dazzling display of virtuosity for\u00a0 pianists.<\/p>\n<p>The concert, on Monday 14 November, starts at 1.10pm, and finishes at 1.50pm.
