The festival celebrates the music of the Baltic, with compositions and performers from countries including Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania alongside a veritable banquet of contemporary works by other composers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2011\/05\/Sounds-New_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2789\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2011\/05\/Sounds-New_web-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2011\/05\/Sounds-New_web-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2011\/05\/Sounds-New_web-106x150.jpg 106w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2011\/05\/Sounds-New_web.jpg 317w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a>The Choir of King&#8217;s College, Cambridge will be giving the UK premiere of Arvo P\u00e4rt&#8217;s <em>Adam&#8217;s Lament<\/em> in a concert in the Cathedral on Friday 27; P\u00e4rt is this year&#8217;s Guest Composer, and the same concert also features his <a href=\"http:\/\/play.last.fm\/preview\/2919401.mp3\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten<\/em><\/a> as well as Britten, Gorecki and Nicholas Maw.<\/p>\n<p>Choral evensong earlier in the afternoon on the same day will include P\u00e4rt&#8217;s <em>I Am The True Vine<\/em> and <em>Magnificat<\/em>, with the Choir of Canterbury Cathedral directed by David Flood. Elsewhere during the festival season, there&#8217;s also a conference on Baltic music and musicologies, and papers on the music of P\u00e4rt in particular.<\/p>\n<div class=\"kent-video-wrapper\"><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='474' height='297' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pk1DeVJHiqk?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>The BBC Big Band will be appearing in the Gulbenkian Theatre on Sunday 21 with Duke Ellington&#8217;s jazz-wise glance at Tchaikovsky&#8217;s <em>Nutcracker<\/em>, whilst the New Perspective Ensemble on Friday 27 presents music by Magnus Lindberg and Oliver Knussen. There&#8217;s also a premiere by the festival director Paul Max Edlin, and music by Sofia Gubaidulina, Poul Ruders, Ligeti, S\u00f8rensen, N\u00f8rg\u00e5rd and others. Some of the festival will be broadcast on Radio 3&#8217;s &#8216;Hear and Now&#8217; series, including Glass&#8217;s <em>Symphony no.3<\/em> for strings and pieces by Terry Riley and P\u00e4rt on Thursday 26.<\/p>\n<div class=\"kent-video-wrapper\"><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='474' height='297' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/txEZI-uY4ns?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>This year marks the launch of Sounds New Poetry, and includes the University&#8217;s very own Patricia Debney, Senior Lecture in Creative Writing, in a discussion about the relationship between words and music called &#8216;Roundtable&#8217; on Tuesday 24 at 6pm.<\/p>\n<p>WIth a host of other events including poetry, workshops, film and talks, there&#8217;ll be something for everyone.
