Ice ? Freezing temperatures ? Events being cancelled at the fall of a flake ? Jazz @ 5 <em>laughs<\/em> at such things!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2451\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2451\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2451 \" title=\"SP_A0508_web\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/12\/SP_A0508_web.jpg\" alt=\"Jazz @ 5\" width=\"269\" height=\"358\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lights out for the territory...<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With temperatures plummeting and snow and ice everywhere, the last Jazz @ 5 of the term warmed a suitably appreciative audience on Wednesday night, with a sprinkling of jazz-infused carols and popular Christmas favourites, a dash of funk and a slice of soul.<\/p>\n<p>Making her debut at Kent, and beginning the evening in fine style, Ruby Mutlow gave a\u00a0robust rendition of Macy Gray&#8217;s funk-laden <em>Why Didn&#8217;t You Call Me,\u00a0<\/em>and Marvin Gaye&#8217;s soul classic\u00a0<em>What&#8217;s Goin&#8217; On<\/em>. \u00a0Also one of the Big Band singers this year, as well as singing with Chorus and Sing!, Ruby has a vibrant vocal presence on-stage, and will be one to watch this year.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the Music Department&#8217;s very own Sophie Meikle stepped away from upright bass in the previous gig and stepped up to the microphone to sing <em>White Christmas<\/em> and <em>Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas<\/em>, the latter holding the attention of a rapt audience so closely that it felt like no-one breathed for the duration of the song.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to the Gulbenkian Foyer stage was the classy Steph Richardson, with a poised reading of Peggy Lee&#8217;s <em>Black Coffee, <\/em>a coquettish <em>Santa, Baby<\/em> and a\u00a0deft<em>\u00a0Let It Snow<\/em>! There&#8217;s a real sense of accomplishment whenever Steph\u00a0performs,\u00a0she is completely at ease on the stage and with the other musicians. With Ruby and Jo as well, it&#8217;s an exciting year for jazz singers at Kent!<\/p>\n<p>Also\u00a0stepping onto the stage for the first time\u00a0was\u00a0first-year pianist Kirstie Robbie, who played<em> Winter Wonderland<\/em> with the ensemble, and also<em> Wagglestick Walkabout<\/em> as a solo item, the latter with a firm\u00a0boogie-woogie feel to the left-hand.<\/p>\n<p>Regulars Dan Harding on piano, Andrew Kitchin\u00a0on guitar, Will Rathbone on sax and Matt Bardrick on drums,\u00a0<em>\u00a0<\/em>were joined by Alastair Disley, a member of the\u00a0Music and Audio Department of the School of Arts based in Medway, on electric bass, who heroically sat in at a few hours&#8217; notice for his first Jazz @ 5. The group\u00a0played a spirited performance of Herbie Hancock&#8217;s funky <em>Canteloupe Island.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to all those\u00a0who performed and\u00a0especially to\u00a0those\u00a0making their debut on the University jazz scene.
