{"id":2190,"date":"2010-11-01T10:50:24","date_gmt":"2010-11-01T09:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=2190"},"modified":"2010-11-01T10:54:40","modified_gmt":"2010-11-01T09:54:40","slug":"packed-house-for-scholars-festival-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2010\/11\/01\/packed-house-for-scholars-festival-concert\/","title":{"rendered":"Packed house for Scholars&#8217; Festival concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve done three Scholars\u2019 Festival Lunchtime Concerts in the Canterbury Festival since my time at Kent began, and I\u2019ve never seen the Festival Club as packed as it was on Friday. \u00a0The audience were crammed into every available space, with extra seating having to be put out along the sides, and the view from the stage was rather intimidating.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2201\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2201\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/11\/festival-lunchtime_web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2201 \" style=\"border: 5px solid white;margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px\" title=\"festival lunchtime_web\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/11\/festival-lunchtime_web-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Festival Scholars\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/11\/festival-lunchtime_web-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/11\/festival-lunchtime_web.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarah Davies, Anna Beth Saffrey, Andrew Kitchin, Will Rathbone, Chris Gray, Alice Godwin, Kate Lumley, Lena Younes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not intimidating enough, however, to dismay the array of Music Scholars, who performed a diverse and entertaining programme that clearly delighted a packed house.<\/p>\n<p>Politics student and flautist with the University Orchestra, Alice Godwin, opened the concert with a pair of charming pieces by Benjamin Godard, and was followed by Anna Beth Saffery, reading Drama, who sang Mozart\u2019s breathless <em>Voi che sapete<\/em> and gave a lulling rendition of <em>A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Architecture student Chris Gray performed the first movement of Gregson\u2019s Tuba Concerto, and demonstrated that, whilst it may be the largest of the instruments in the orchestra, it can also be one of the most light-footed \u2013 he gave a deft performance, full of agility and lyricism.<\/p>\n<p>Clarinet tutor and Big Band conductor Ian Swatman led a clarinet trio in an arrangement of music by Bach, with Kate Lumley (English Language) and Sarah Davies (English Literature), who are stalwarts of both the University Orchestra\u2019s clarinet section and the Concert Band.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2193\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2193\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/10\/jazz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2193  \" style=\"margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px;border: 5px solid white\" title=\"jazz\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/10\/jazz-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jazz Katz\" width=\"203\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/10\/jazz-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/10\/jazz.jpg 384w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All that jazz...<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The mood then shifted to jazz, as guitarist Andrew Kitchin (Maths) and saxophonist Will Rathbone (Drama) played two standards, <em>The Nearness of You<\/em> and <em>Blue Bossa<\/em>, with Ian Swatman sitting in. Both Will and Andrew have been bastions of the &#8216;Jazz @ 5&#8217; series in the Gulbenkian each month, and here showed the same relaxed attitude to playing that has made them so indispensable to the series.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/10\/lena.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2192\" style=\"margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px;border: white 5px solid\" title=\"lena\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/10\/lena-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lena Younes\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/10\/lena-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/10\/lena.jpg 384w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Bringing the concert to a sparkling conclusion (and not simply because of her shoes) was soprano Lena Younes (History and Drama), who sang <em>Lullaby of Birdland <\/em>before giving a crowd-pleasing and characterful performance of Flanders and Swann\u2019s <em>The Warthog<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanied throughout by Deputy Director of Music, Dan Harding, the concert proved once again that the University\u2019s music department is rich in young, talented musicians, even though there is no formal music degree on the Canterbury campus.
