{"id":1848,"date":"2010-09-06T10:34:09","date_gmt":"2010-09-06T09:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=1848"},"modified":"2010-09-06T10:34:09","modified_gmt":"2010-09-06T09:34:09","slug":"exuberance-in-music-joe-zawinuls-patriots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2010\/09\/06\/exuberance-in-music-joe-zawinuls-patriots\/","title":{"rendered":"Exuberance in music: Joe Zawinul&#8217;s &#8216;Patriots&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For sheer unbridled exuberance in music and matchless energy, here&#8217;s the late, great Joe Zawinul&#8217;s &#8216;Zawinul Syndicate&#8217; performing <em>Patriots<\/em> live in 1997.<\/p>\n<div class=\"kent-video-wrapper\"><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='474' height='297' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WpNjZDX0-uc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>After an all too brief but dizzying bass solo from the great Richard Bona, the unstoppable rhythmic drive of the piece kicks in: it&#8217;s hard not to be carried away\u00a0by its infectious <em>joie de vivre<\/em> and sheer pleasure in playing. Once the groove has begun, propelled by some astonishing percussion work, it never lets up: the piece just cooks nicely and with such ease, you can forget that it&#8217;s leading at such a frenetic pace.<\/p>\n<p>Zawinul led the great fusion band <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weather_Report\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Weather Report<\/em> <\/a>in the 1970s and 80s, a legendary ensemble including ex-Miles Davis sideman, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, bassist Jaco Pastorius (listen to <a href=\"http:\/\/play.last.fm\/preview\/110438567.mp3\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Teen Town<\/em> <\/a>to get an idea of Jaco&#8217;s astonishing virtuosity and raising of the bass to a melodic instrument; Bach would have loved it), and drummer Peter Erskine. The group&#8217;s dazzling blending of jazz, rock and\u00a0world music saw the creation of great albums such as <em><a href=\"http:\/\/play.last.fm\/preview\/8031.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">Black Market<\/a><\/em>, <em>Heavy Weather<\/em>, <em>8.30<\/em> and <em>Sportin&#8217; Life<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Zawinul himself played with Miles Davis for a brief period, and wrote the lyrical <a href=\"http:\/\/play.last.fm\/preview\/11789217.mp3\" target=\"_blank\"><em>In A Silent Way<\/em> <\/a>from Davis&#8217; album of the same name, and also played on Davis&#8217; <em>Bitches Brew<\/em>, the fastest-selling jazz album of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Zawinul&#8217;s own <em>Zawinul Syndicate<\/em> saw the same driving and energetic performances typified in <em>Patriots<\/em> right up until Zawinul&#8217;s death\u00a0in September,\u00a02007.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the secret to music-making, and to great performances: passion, commitment and joy in performing.<\/p>\n<p>(And to the members of the University Chamber Choir 2008-09, for whom I wrote a\u00a0choral\u00a0arrangement of <em>Patriots<\/em>: remember this ?!
