{"id":11680,"date":"2024-12-10T12:54:03","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T12:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=11680"},"modified":"2024-12-16T11:21:28","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T11:21:28","slug":"winter-nights-weekend-premiere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2024\/12\/10\/winter-nights-weekend-premiere\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Nights weekend premiere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s always both exciting and a little bit daunting, taking on a contemporary piece of music to give the UK premiere &#8211; and even more so when the composer herself is in the audience!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11679\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11679\" style=\"width: 3024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11679\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2024\/12\/PXL_20241207_135741471.PORTRAIT.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3024\" height=\"4032\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stephanie Martin attending the afternoon rehearsal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11633\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11633\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11633\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2024\/10\/steph_martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11633\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stephanie Martin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last weekend saw the Music department&#8217;s combination of concerts, &#8216;<strong>Winter Journeys, Winter Nights<\/strong>&#8216; featuring the String Sinfonia, Concert Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Cecilian Choir and Flute Choir coming together over two nights to perform seasonal works, the centrepiece of which was a marvellously colourful seasonal cantata, <em>Winter Nights<\/em>, by the Canadian composer, <a href=\"https:\/\/stephaniemartinmusic.com\/\"><strong>Stephanie Martin.<\/strong><\/a> This five-movement work sets a variety of poems focusing on different aspects of the winter season, from the anonymous &#8216;Cold is the night when when stars shine bright,&#8217;\u00a0 through the fierce drama of &#8216;Loud rings the frozen earth&#8217; by James Thompson, to the wonder and mystery of Cori Martin&#8217;s &#8216;Could it be true \/ Old Thomas Hardy&#8217;s tale,&#8217; all culminating in Thomas Campion&#8217;s &#8216;Now winter nights enlarge.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The piece distils a variety of colours, textures and vivid images from the cast of voices, strings and percussion, reflecting the manifold aspects of the season, and the whole cantata captures the full range of the season\u2019s contrasts &#8211; its warmth, magic, wonder, jollity, bitterness, wildness, and revelry \u2013 bringing the different scenes to vivid life with a vibrant energy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11677\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11677\" style=\"width: 4032px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11677\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2024\/12\/PXL_20241207_145634978.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stephanie talking with choir and orchestra<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We were delighted to welcome Stephanie to the afternoon rehearsal &#8211; always a slightly scary moment, the first time performing a piece in front of the composer &#8211; and then to the evening performance.
