Last night, the Choir was delighted to welcome poet Nancy Gaffield to the rehearsal; Nancy has written four new poems which are interspersed with the text of the Magnificat, with music written by Russell Hepplewhite for mixed choir and string orchestra.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11175\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11175\" style=\"width: 475px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11175\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2023\/02\/IMG_20230131_183222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"339\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11175\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Poet Nancy Gaffield (centre) with the University Cecilian Choir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11176\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11176\" style=\"width: 180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11176\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2023\/02\/Nancy-Gaffield.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11176\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nancy Gaffield<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The new piece is an exciting blend of high energy, driving rhythms, lyrical melody and sumptuous harmonic colours, particularly in the sections setting Nancy&#8217;s poetry; each of the four poems is written in response to a famous piece of art representing stages in the life of Christ, including Michelangelo&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Birth of Adam,<\/em>\u00a0Ghirandaio&#8217;s <em>The Visitation<\/em>,\u00a0 and Piero della Francesca&#8217;s <em>The Baptism of Christ<\/em>.
