{"id":11059,"date":"2022-06-27T14:40:41","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T13:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=11059"},"modified":"2022-06-27T14:40:41","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T13:40:41","slug":"university-music-prizes-recognise-outstanding-contributions-to-music-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2022\/06\/27\/university-music-prizes-recognise-outstanding-contributions-to-music-making\/","title":{"rendered":"University Music Prizes recognise outstanding contributions to music-making"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the highlights of Summer Music Week is the Music Prizes ceremony, an occasion to recognise the outstanding contributions made by some of those taking part in extra-curricular music over the course of the academic year.\u00a0 This year, we were especially delighted to return to the in-person ceremony, which follows the annual Music Scholars&#8217; Lunchtime Recital, and to welcome supporters, benefactors and guests for the first time since 2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11061\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11061\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11061\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2022\/06\/DSF9753-2500x1667-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charlotte Cane receives her prize from Rosie Turner, Director of the Canterbury Festival<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Director of the Canterbury Festival, Rosie Turner, was present to award the Canterbury Festival Prize, awarded annually to a\u00a0 <span data-contrast=\"auto\">final-year student who has made an outstanding contribution to music at the University. This year&#8217;s winner was s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">econd-year postgraduate Architecture student, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Charlotte Cane;\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a Music Performance Scholar, leading the second violin section in the Symphony Orchestra as well as playing viola in the autumn term, and a viola player in the String Sinfonia, Charlotte also performed the solo viola part in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ulysses Awakes<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by John Woolrich in the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Composer in Focus<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> event with both the composer and her teacher present.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11063\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11063\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11063\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2022\/06\/DSF9781-2500x1667-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Keith Mander presents the Colyer-Fergusson Prize to third-year Holly Porton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11062\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2022\/06\/DSF9766-2500x1667-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"133\" \/>Former Pro Vice Chancellor and current Chair of the Board of Canterbury Festival, Professor Keith Mander, presented the <b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fColyer-Fergusson Music Prize<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: awarded to a student who has made a major contribution to the organisation of music at the University. This year&#8217;s winner was se<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cond-year Architecture student, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Holly Porton;\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 Secretary to the Music Society, Holly has been particularly helpful in dealing with administrative connections between the Music department and the Music Society. Holly also played clarinet in the Symphony Orchestra and Concert Band, violin in the String Sinfonia, and played piano in the pit band for the spring production by the Musical Theatre Society.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11064\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11064\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11064\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2022\/06\/DSF9815-2500x1667-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Second-year postgraduate Biomedical Science student, Kammy Pike, receives her prize from Head of Music Performance, Dan Harding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John Craven Music Prize<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: awarded to a returning student who has made a major contribution to music at the University, and this year was a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">warded jointly to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kammy Pike<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Michael Lam.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Second-year postgraduate in Biosciences and a Music Performance\u00a0 Scholar, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kammy Pike<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has led the Symphony Orchestra this year including in the annual Cathedral Concert, and also plays in the String Sinfonia, with whom she played the final solo movement of Vivaldi\u2019s <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spring<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in a recent performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10951\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10951\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10951\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2022\/04\/NEB_7542.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"711\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KMMS Music Performance Scholar, Michael Lam, performing in Colyer-Fergusson Hall in April 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Second-year undergraduate and a Music Performance Scholar in the Kent and Medway Medical School, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Michael Lam<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> gave an outstanding recital as part of the spring term\u2019s Lunchtime Concert series, the first student to be invited to do so, delivering a highly-accomplished programme entirely from memory. He also played the celeste part in the December concert in Tchaikovsky\u2019s <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Nutcracker Suite<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"> The John Craven prizes were presented by Head of Music Performance, Dan Harding (awarded to Michael\u00a0<em>in absentia<\/em>, as Michael was on placement throughout the week).<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11068\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11068\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11068\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2022\/06\/DSF9881-2500x1667-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11068\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joanna Adaran (l) and Felicity Bourdillon and Nathan Sharp (r) with David Humphreys&#8217; daughters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">David Humphreys Music Prize <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is warded to a student who has made a particularly special contribution to music-making; this year, it was a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">warded jointly to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Joanna Adaran, Felicity Bourdillon<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nathan Sharp<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"> , and presented by David&#8217;s daughters, Belinda and Jo, who spoke briefly about their father&#8217;s enjoyment of, and support for, music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Final-year Comparative Literature and Drama student, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Joanna Adaran<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is a Music Performance Scholar and has been a major participant in this year\u2019s activities by the Musical Theatre Society in showcases and events, and also had a principal role in the society\u2019s production of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Hunchback of Notre-Dame<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> performed in the Great Hall of Kent College in March. She also sings with the Cecilian Choir.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11065\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11065\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11065\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2022\/06\/DSF9840-2500x1667-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Final-year Drama and Comparative Literature student, Joanna Adaran, receiving her prize<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Final-year Psychology student <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Felicity Bourdillon<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> holds a Music Performance Award; she has really grown in her abilities this year, taking a lead role in the Chamber Choir, Cecilian Choir and Chorus; she sang the opening solo verse in the University Carol Service at the Cathedral in December, and will be singing the solo <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pie Jesu<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> movement of Faure\u2019s Requiem in the chamber choir Crypt concert in June. Her singing has really developed this year, and she has led the soprano section in chamber choir particularly with authority.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11066\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11066\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11066\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2022\/06\/DSF9852-2500x1667-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Final-year Psychology student, Felicity Bourdillon (r), receives her prize<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Second-year Music and Audio Production student and Music Performance Scholar, drummer <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nathan Sharp<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has been a major force behind the weekly live music nights and Open Mic nights at the Deep End venue in Medway with the Medway Music Society, playing in numerous bands and also being partly responsible for organising the events. He also performed in the Pop Platform event in the Gulbenkian Caf\u00e9 in December.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11067\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11067\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2022\/06\/DSF9863-2500x1667-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Second-year Music and Audio Technology student, Nathan Sharp, collects his prize<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The final prize, presented by the Director of\u00a0 Engagement, Philip Pothen, was the <b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">University of Kent First-Year Music Prize<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which is occasionally awarded to a student who has made a major contribution to music in their first year\u202f, and which was awarded to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yuyu Hosokawa.\u00a0 <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yuyu is a highly accomplished flautist, a Music Performance Scholar and a vital member of the woodwind section in the Symphony Orchestra, playing with poise in both the December and the March Cathedral concerts, as well as taking part in a Music Scholars&#8217; masterclass with the London Conchord Ensemble in March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11069\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2022\/06\/DSF9909-2500x1667-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" \/>Together with the Music Scholars&#8217;
