{"id":766,"date":"2020-03-31T12:55:53","date_gmt":"2020-03-31T12:55:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/memsnews\/?p=766"},"modified":"2020-03-31T13:41:37","modified_gmt":"2020-03-31T13:41:37","slug":"new-research-grant-award-for-mems-dr-ryan-perry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/memsnews\/2020\/03\/31\/new-research-grant-award-for-mems-dr-ryan-perry\/","title":{"rendered":"New research grant award for MEMS&#8217; Dr Ryan Perry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many congratulations to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/medieval-early-modern-studies\/people\/105\/perry-ryan\">Dr Ryan Perry<\/a> (University of Kent) and to <a href=\"https:\/\/pure.qub.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/stephen-kelly\">Dr Stephen Kelly<\/a> (Queens University of Belfast) who have just been awarded \u00a3367,000 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leverhulme.ac.uk\/\">Leverhulme Trust<\/a> for a project entitled, <strong>&#8216;Whittington\u2019s Gift: Reconstructing the Lost Common Library of London\u2019s Guildhall&#8217;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The three-year project will employ two postdoctoral research associates, and include the input of two expert consultants, Emeritus Professors James Carley (York, Toronto) and Ralph Hanna (Keble College, Oxford).\u00a0 <em>Whittington\u2019s Gift<\/em> will aim to trace the parts of the now lost Guildhall collection of \u2018theological works\u2019 that the project team contend engendered an explosion in pastoral writing in fifteenth-century London.<\/p>\n<p><em>Whittington&#8217;s Gift<\/em> aims to demonstrate that London citizens created new programmes of religious education for both the City&#8217;s clergy and for literate lay communities that have hitherto gone largely unnoticed by scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the legacy of Richard Whittington (d. 1423), perhaps London\u2019s most storied mayor, an extraordinary resource for religious education emerged under the auspices of Whittington\u2019s innovative executor, John Carpenter, common clerk of London\u2019s Guildhall, who founded a new \u2018Common library\u2019 as part of the Guildhall\u2019s complex of buildings.
