What I discovered was far more rewarding than I had expected. Conferences have become one of the most enjoyable part of my experience as a medieval historian. They are spaces where research comes alive, where ideas are tested, friendships are formed, and history is shared beyond the university.

One event that really demonstrates this to me is the annual Canterbury History Weekend. What makes the weekend so special is the way it brings together different audiences. There are students, established academics, local history enthusiasts, and members of the public all coming together to explore history from a range of different perspectives. The talks are scholarly, but they are also accessible and engaging, showing how historians can communicate complex ideas in ways that reach wider audiences. For me, it highlights the importance of public outreach. Critical engagement with history should not only exist within universities, and events like this help connect research with local communities and with people who are simply curious about the past.

Conferences are also valuable because they allow researchers to hear about the latest work in their field. Reading journal articles and books is essential, of course, but conferences often provide the first glimpse of new research before it is formally published. Attending talks can introduce you to new methods, new questions, and even entirely new areas of study. Some of the most interesting ideas I have encountered have come from conversations over coffee between or after sessions, rather than from publications.

One of the biggest benefits, especially as a postgraduate researcher, is the opportunity to receive feedback on work in progress. Presenting an early version of a paper can feel intimidating, but it is incredibly useful. Questions from the audience often reveal new perspectives or highlight issues I had not considered before. Conferences create spaces for academic debate in a supportive environment, helping researchers refine their ideas and improve their work before publication or submission.

They are also excellent opportunities for improving communication and presentation skills. Conferences are not only about formal papers, but many also include workshops, demonstrations, poster sessions, exhibitions, and even day trips. Each format encourages different ways of thinking about how we present research. Learning how to explain your research clearly and confidently to different audiences is an important skill, whether speaking to academics, students, or members of the public.

Another important aspect of conferences is networking. Academia can sometimes feel isolating, particularly during postgraduate study, so meeting other researchers working on similar topics is invaluable. Conferences create opportunities to exchange ideas, discuss shared interests, and build professional connections. Some of the most encouraging conversations I have had have been with other postgraduate students who understand the challenges of research!

All of this is why I am particularly looking forward to MEMSFest. Organised by fellow postgraduate students, MEMSFest represents the kind of welcoming and collaborative academic environment that is so important for early-career researchers. For me, it is not only an opportunity to share my own work, but also to learn from others, engage in discussion, and become part of a wider scholarly community. Conferences like MEMSfest remind me that research is not something done alone. My work as a researcher has benefitted so much from conversation, debate, collaboration, and the shared enthusiasm of people who care passionately about understanding the past.

Angela Broomfield

I’m in the first year of my PhD and this will be my very first experience of a MEMSfest. The event, however, is now in its twelfth year and a look at previous schedules makes for fascinating reading. Those past schedules reveal just how much important, interdisciplinary research takes place at MEMS, bringing new interpretations and narratives. This year’s Fest, with its theme of ‘Storycrafts in the Premodern World’, promises to be just as enriching.

The medieval and early modern centuries stretch across a vibrant period of societal transition through which MEMS researchers are engaging with critical questions, highlighting marginalised voices and revealing the hidden stories of human experience. The theme of storycrafts feels particularly fitting for Canterbury – the town that is the destination of Chaucer’s pilgrims, and that witnessed the birth of the playwright and poet Christopher Marlowe. Investigating how narratives were crafted, communicated and preserved gives access to the beliefs, values, attitudes and assumptions of a community.

Many things make the MEMSfest so special. Importantly, MEMSfest creates a friendly, collaborative space in which to engage different perspectives on the past and its significance to the present. The MEMS community at the University of Kent are the most amazing and supportive group. Having said that, presenting research to a group of people can be scary, so MEMSfest is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a friendly, supportive environment! Most importantly, MEMSfest is a chance to support other speakers and contribute to the community, because we’re all here to learn, generate new thoughts, share ideas and gain fresh insight. Collaborating and hearing about new ideas and progress in the broader field are essential for sustaining our motivation and resilience over four (or more) years of research!

This blog post is repurposed from the MEMS Lib site, see more here.

For this week’s blog, two History PhD students from the University of Kent share their perspectives on the benefits of attending research conferences and … Read more

[124
