This year was another storming MEMS Fest put together by our wonderful 2025 committee. As ever it reflected current trends in research in the most inspiring way, showcasing in particular the richness brought to analysis by novel approaches, methodologies and engagement with those outside of academia – through re-enactment, practice-based research, embedding in heritage institutions and storytelling. One of the MEMS Fest committee, MEMS MA student Christian Tofte has kindly written up this year’s report:<\/p>\n

As I type this beneath the sweltering Kentish sun, I look back fondly on a truly excellent MEMS Fest. First there were the panels, a range of exciting papers on a variety of topics from machinery in medieval drama to Kentish rebellions, all delivered by a fantastic cohort of speakers, both in person and online, assembled from far and wide. Then there were the workshops, which included medieval calligraphy, a (non-lethal) demonstration of medieval murder, and a hilarious performance of Shakespeare. On Friday evening, having made our way down to the cathedral, we were treated to our marvellous keynote speaker, Helen Carr, who gave us an informative and insightful window into her research and work as as an historian and writer, and to a smashing wine reception kindly sponsored by CAMEMS (sign up now!<\/a>). After possibly one of the worst thunderstorms on record during the night, we returned the next day for yet more amazing panels on fascinating subjects.
