Use journal articles when you need original research on a specific topic from a reliable source.

Many academic journals are “peer-reviewed” which means they have been checked by academic experts to make sure they are reliable. Scholarly journals take less time to publish than books, so they’re often a good way to identify the latest thinking on a topic.

  • Historical Abstracts: material covering 1450- (excluding America)
  • Medieval and Early Modern Bibliographies(from Brepolis): Includes records from the International Medieval Bibliography, Bibliographie de civilisation médiévale and International Bibliography of Humanism and the Renaissance covering European history from 300 to 1700.
  • Bibliography of British and Irish History (hosted by Brepolis): Bibliographic data on British and Irish history and relations with the Empire and the Commonwealth, from 55 BC to the present.
  • Bibliography of the History of Art(access via Getty Institute website).
  • Periodicals Archive Online(from ProQuest): Access to the full runs of over 700 journals across key subject areas in the humanities and social sciences; the archive spans more than two centuries of content and multiple languages.
  • Index of Medieval Art: Index to archive and images of medieval art.
  • MLA Bibliography (Modern Language Association)(from EBSCO): Modern Language Association index to material on languages, literatures and linguistics published since 1963.
  • MLA Directory of Periodicals: Information on journals and book series within the scope of the MLA International Bibliography, including contact details, descriptions of scope, peer review, and submission guidelines.
  • Annual Bibliography of English Language & Literature (ABELL) – part of Literature Online: ABELL lists articles, books and reviews concerning English language and literature published worldwide from 1920 onwards.
  • Religious and theological abstracts: index to articles on theology and religion 1957-.

More generalist databases with good coverage of MEMS topics

  • Web of Science: includes 200 core history titles.
  • Zetoc: gives access to over 36,000 journals and more than 59 million article citations.
  • Journal Archives: includes titles especially relevant for History of Science, but also has good general coverage.
  • Periodicals Archive Online: contains over 700 humanities journals comprising more than 3 million articles and 15 million article pages.
