The Templeman Library now has access to <em>Variety<\/em> Ultimate. This means that most issues of the American trade journal (from 1905-the present)\u00a0can now be searched and accessed. This is excellent news for research at Kent generally, and, of course, melodrama.<\/p>\n<p>The link: <a href=\"http:\/\/chain.kent.ac.uk\/login?url=http:\/\/www.varietyultimate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/chain.kent.ac.uk\/login?url=http:\/\/www.varietyultimate.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have had a very quick look in terms of film melodrama and found this very early review by &#8216;Jolo&#8217; of the film <em>The Big Sister<\/em> on 15th of September 1916, p 26: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.varietyultimate.com.chain.kent.ac.uk\/archive\/issue\/WV-09-15-1916-26\">http:\/\/www.varietyultimate.com.chain.kent.ac.uk\/archive\/issue\/WV-09-15-1916-26<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/melodramaresearchgroup\/files\/2013\/10\/big-sister.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-663\" alt=\"big sister\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/melodramaresearchgroup\/files\/2013\/10\/big-sister.png\" width=\"255\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The film was directed by John\u00a0B O&#8217;Brien and starred Mae Murray.&#8217;Jolo&#8217; opined that\u00a0the film &#8216;is melodrama without any attempt at concealment&#8217;. The mention of concealment is interesting in\u00a0two ways. Firstly it indicates the reviewer&#8217;s, and the general,\u00a0rather negative view of melodrama by suggesting that other\u00a0melodramas might try to appear to be something else. But also, as we have seen, concealment is often a key theme of melodrama.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">There will be many, many more exciting nuggets relating to melodrama, so do take a look.
