Set in the north of England during the Great Depression,\u00a0the plot\u00a0concerns unemployment and poverty amongst the working classes.<\/p>\n<p>Due to its subject matter,\u00a0the novel was not\u00a0permitted to be filmed by the British Board of Film Censors until 1941.
