We\u2019ll be screening <em>Female<\/em> (1933, Michael Curtiz, 60 mins), on Tuesday 16<sup>th<\/sup> of January, 5-7pm, in Jarman 6.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/melodramaresearchgroup\/files\/2017\/12\/female-title.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1896\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/melodramaresearchgroup\/files\/2017\/12\/female-title.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The film stars Ruth Chatterton as Alison Drake, the owner-manager of a family business whose casual affairs with men turn serious once she meets Jim Thorne (George Brent). Like <em>Baby Face<\/em>, a film we screened at towards the end of the Autumn Term, <em>Female<\/em> is a pre-code film, written by Gene Markey and Kathryn Scola. \u00a0It too raises many interesting issues regarding film history, audience address, gender and genre.
