All are very welcome to join us for the\u00a0last of this term\u2019s Screening and Discussion sessions, which will take place on\u00a0Monday the\u00a014th of December, 4.30-7pm, in Jarman 7.<\/p>\n

We will be showing Ann-Marie’s festive\u00a0choice: T<\/em>he Muppet Christmas Carol <\/em>(1992, Brian Henson, 85 minutes).<\/p>\n

Ann-Marie has very kindly provided the following introduction:<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Muppet Christmas Carol<\/em> (Brian Henson, 1992) retells Charles Dickens’ famous festive novella, A Christmas Carol<\/em>.\u00a0The original story was first published in 1843 and received critical acclaim for its story of a bitter,\u00a0ageing man that comes to realise the error\u00a0of his ways. Since its publication it has been re-told in a variety of mediums, each attempting to add their own creative individuality onto the timeless story.<\/p>\n

The Muppets, with their usual self-reflective humour, seem to be an odd choice for this week’s film.\u00a0\u00a0However, despite Gonzo’s amusing depiction as an\u00a0omniscient\u00a0narrator, the film does have some classic tropes. Some examples of the tropes that appear include:\u00a0performance\u00a0style, disguise and music.\u00a0In the\u00a0next session it may be useful to\u00a0debate how Charles Dickens’ work is adapted from screen, and if his\u00a0sensationalist\u00a0writing has impacted the depiction of his work in cinema.<\/p>\n
