We will be\u00a0showing Stella<em> Maris<\/em> (1918, Marshall Neilan, 84 mins).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/melodramaresearchgroup\/files\/2013\/11\/Stella-Maris.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-839\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/melodramaresearchgroup\/files\/2013\/11\/Stella-Maris.png\" alt=\"Stella Maris\" width=\"252\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Neilan&#8217;s film focuses on the two women pictured above: the title character and her inverted mirror image, both of whom are played by Mary Pickford.\u00a0Stella Maris is a young, paralysed woman who has deliberately been kept\u00a0ignorant of the suffering people are capable of inflicting on one another. By contrast, Unity Blake is\u00a0a young orphan who is severely beaten by her violent alcoholic female employer. The pair are brought together by their mutual love for one man &#8211; John Risca (Conway Tearle) &#8211; and Unity sacrifices her life\u00a0for Stella and John&#8217;s\u00a0happiness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The melodramatic plot\u00a0 outlined above should provide much for us to discuss, while the doubling of Pickford as both characters links closely to the Gothic tradition, discussed earlier this year in relation to <em>Black Swan <\/em>(2010).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Do join us, if you can, for one of Pickford&#8217;s finest films.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted by Sarah All are very welcome to join us for the\u00a0third of this term\u2019s screenings, which will take place on the\u00a010th of November, Jarman 7, 5-7pm.
