Save the Date: A Celebration of Languages, Ideas, and Creativity – 5 June!

At the Language Centre, we like to celebrate the end of the year in style — and this year promises to be bigger and more exciting than ever.

On Friday 5 June, join us for the Language Centre Festival of Ideas End-of-Year Conference, a full day dedicated to celebrating languages, ideas, thought, and creativity. Running from 10:00 to 17:00 in the Templeman seminar rooms, the event brings together students and staff from Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Philosophy, and Religious Studies for a vibrant, interdisciplinary exchange.

Throughout the day, you can look forward to inspiring student presentations, performances and screenings, a keynote speaker, and plenty of opportunities to connect over drinks and nibbles — all in a lively, creative atmosphere. You’ll be able to dip in and out of sessions, explore work from across disciplines, and celebrate the diversity of ideas in our community.

Adding to the festivities, we’re also hosting our very first Intercultural Costume Competition on the same day. This year’s theme — intercultural communication — invites you to celebrate cultural diversity and heritage through creative dress. You might come as a historical or literary figure, a character from myth or folklore, or even a playful cultural mash-up. There will be music, drinks, and nibbles, along with goodie bags for the winners. Even better, the event will support charities promoting literacy and access to language education, with donations increasing as more participants take part. Creativity is encouraged in every form — including musical performances if you’d like to bring a character to life!

Save the date and get ready to celebrate the incredible diversity of languages, cultures, and ideas in our community!
