{"id":33,"date":"2020-09-08T09:10:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-08T09:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/lawlinks\/?page_id=33"},"modified":"2026-05-11T13:26:43","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:26:43","slug":"referencing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/lawlinks\/referencing\/","title":{"rendered":"Referencing the law"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>OSCOLA<\/h2>\n<p>OSCOLA (Oxford Standard for the Citation of Legal Authorities) is the citation style used by the Kent Law School.\u00a0 It is a footnote citation system that covers how to cite cases, legislation and commentary.<\/p>\n<p>For remainder of this academic year 2025\/2026 the 4th Edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.ox.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/migrated\/oscola_4th_edn_hart_2012.pdf\">OSCOLA<\/a> should be referred to.<\/p>\n<p>From the academic year 2026\/2027 the 5th edition should be referred to and used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.ox.ac.uk\/sites\/files\/oxlaw\/oscola_4th_edn_hart_2012.pdf\">OSCOLA\u00a0 5th edition<\/a> and changes to the new edition are summarised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.ox.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-04\/OSCOLA%20key%20changes.pdf\">here .<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once you are familiar with OSCOLA there is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.ox.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-03\/OSCOLA%205th%20Edition%20-%20Quick%20Reference%20Guide.pdf\">quick reference guide<\/a>.\u00a0 If you are struggling with how to cite something the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.ox.ac.uk\/oscola-faqs\">FAQs on the OSCOLA site<\/a> can often provide help.<\/p>\n<p>Watch these interactive tutorials from City Law School for a great overview:<\/p>\n<div class=\"kent-video-wrapper\"><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center;
