Through the Clinical Option module students have the unique opportunity to work directly with clients of Kent Law Clinic while critically exploring issues such as access to justice and the role of lawyers within the justice system.

As part of the Diversity Mark process, Hannah reviewed the full range of materials provided to students on the module — not only the reading list, but all learning resources and activities. The process required careful consideration of accessibility, inclusivity and engagement for the diverse student body within Kent Law School. It posed an important question: are we teaching law in a truly critical way, ensuring that diverse perspectives are meaningfully represented?

Below, Hannah reflects on the review process and what the award means for her teaching practice.

What motivated you to pursue the Diversity Mark Practitioner Award?

I enjoy seeing students becoming genuinely excited about what they are studying and perhaps helping to plant the seed for what they may go on to pursue after their degrees. With that in mind, I am always looking for opportunities to develop my teaching and supervision practice.

When the Diversity Mark Practitioner Award was highlighted as an option during the PGCHE, it seemed like an excellent opportunity to reflect more deeply on my teaching and to identify practical ways to strengthen the module.

What did the process entail?

I was provided with suggested frameworks to assess the module content, including guidance on how to consider the diversity of perspectives represented within the module resources. I then researched and wrote about the extent to which we can diversify the curriculum when teaching students about law in the UK. Finally, I developed a SMART action plan to support the future development of the module. This helped me identify several key objectives for strengthening the Clinical Option moving forwards.

The review also highlighted the benefits of the diverse student and client base within Kent Law Clinic, and the valuable opportunity this creates to draw on the different perspectives already present within our community. The awarding panel suggested further resources to help diversify the material, and ideas have also been developed to broaden the activities used during contact hours. These activities have already started to encourage students to share and engage with a wider range of perspectives.

Hannah Henderson, a Clinic Solicitor within Kent Law School, has been awarded the Diversity Mark Practitioner Award for her review of the Clinical Option module … Read more

[18227,137,124,28766,91617
240373,269064,137,561,269045,162,146516
