Welcome Week at the University of Kent<\/strong><\/a> saw hundreds of new law students descend on our Canterbury campus<\/strong>. It was a vibrant start to the academic year, with a packed schedule of introductory sessions delivered by academics from Kent Law School<\/strong><\/a> to welcome new undergraduate, postgraduate taught, and postgraduate research students.<\/p>\n

The week culminated in the Kent Students\u2019 Union<\/a> Welcome Fair<\/strong>, which featured over 250 student societies representing everything from academic interests to cultural groups and hobbies. Among them were 12 law-related student societies<\/strong>, including Kent Student Law<\/em>, Kent Law Temple Society<\/em>, Canadian Law Society<\/em>, Kent International Law Society<\/em>, Law Podcast Society<\/em>, and the Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law Society<\/em>.<\/p>\n

We spoke with committee members from several of these societies about their experience at the fair \u2014 and what they have planned for the year ahead.<\/p>\n

\n

European Law Students\u2019 Association (ELSA)<\/h2>\n

\u201cHi Kent Community! We are the European Law Students\u2019 Association (ELSA)<\/a> at Kent \u2014 an international, independent, non-political and non-profit organisation run by and for students and recent graduates passionate about developing both academically and personally.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Although \u201cEuropean Law\u201d appears in the name, ELSA\u2019s focus extends far beyond EU law. The society forms part of a vast international network with over 60,000 members across Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIt was lovely meeting everyone at the Welcome Fair on Friday! Despite the weather, the spirit and energy of the Kent Law community were truly uplifting.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

ELSA\u2019s upcoming activities include mock trials<\/strong>, law skills workshops<\/strong>, and prestigious competitions such as the Criminis Moot Court<\/em>, Commercial Law Moot Court<\/em>, and the Helga Pedersen Moot Court Competition<\/em>. The society also hopes to collaborate with Kent MUN<\/em>, the UKC Debate Society<\/em>, and other law groups throughout the year.<\/p>\n

Criminal Law Society<\/h2>\n

\u201cIt was fantastic to see so many students interested in criminal law \u2014 especially those from non-law courses! The fair was a great success, and we welcomed many new members.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Criminal Law Society<\/strong><\/a> is planning an ambitious year ahead, featuring guest speakers, solicitor panels, and career advice sessions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe\u2019re hoping to host our own mock trials and mooting sessions to help members develop advocacy skills,\u201d Mashaal explains. \u201cWe\u2019re also planning relaxed social events like a traditional pizza night with board games and crime-themed movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Collaborations with other law schools across the UK<\/strong> are also in the works.<\/p>\n

\n

Human Rights Law Society<\/h2>\n

\u201cThe Human Rights Law Society<\/a> had a wonderful time at this year\u2019s Welcome Fair. It was inspiring to meet students from diverse academic backgrounds who share an interest in human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Students offered many suggestions for upcoming discussion topics, ranging from gender equality and migration<\/strong> to corporate accountability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The society has a rich programme planned for the year, including panel discussions, film screenings, debates, and socials<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you aspire to a career in human rights or simply want to deepen your awareness of global issues, this society is for you,\u201d says Marie.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Black, Asian and Minority Ethnicities (BAME) Law Society<\/h2>\n

\u201cWe are the BAME Law Society<\/a> \u2014 a community of diverse individuals pursuing law. Our mission is to bridge the gap for underrepresented groups within the legal profession.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The BAME Law Society<\/strong> focuses on empowering students through application workshops<\/strong>, professional networking<\/strong>, and panel discussions<\/strong> with industry experts.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe Welcome Fair was an amazing experience,\u201d says Nana Yaa. \u201cWe loved meeting students from all disciplines. This year, we aim to host inclusive events that welcome everyone while maintaining our focus on supporting law students.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

Empowering Womxn in Law<\/h2>\n

Serena Orme, President<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

\u201c\u2018Empowering Womxn in Law<\/a>\u2019 is a female-led society that represents a marginalised group within the legal industry. We aim to empower women during their university journey and beyond through academic events, socials, and charity work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

One of the society\u2019s major upcoming projects is a charity ball<\/strong> in aid of the UK Stroke Association<\/em> and a member\u2019s family personally affected by stroke.<\/p>\n

Other events include a Freshers\u2019 Q&A panel<\/strong>, a Halloween karaoke night<\/strong>, and a movie night<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe Welcome Fair was a great success,\u201d Serena adds. \u201cWe were thrilled to welcome many students \u2014 law and non-law alike \u2014 who wanted to join our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
