{"id":49,"date":"2014-09-09T09:33:39","date_gmt":"2014-09-09T09:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=49"},"modified":"2019-08-28T12:44:43","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T11:44:43","slug":"environmental-law-expert-william-howarth-to-chair-national-flooding-seminar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/environmental-law-expert-william-howarth-to-chair-national-flooding-seminar\/","title":{"rendered":"Environmental law expert William Howarth to chair national flooding seminar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Environmental law expert Professor William Howarth will chair a national seminar focusing expert discussion on the UK\u2019s recent flooding crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Howarth will be joined by a panel of speakers drawn from the legal, business and regulatory sectors at <a href=\"http:\/\/ukela.sym-online.com\/flooding\/default.htm\">The Flooding Seminar<\/a>, a half-day event being held in London on Monday 29 September.<\/p>\n<p>Discussions will take in a range of topics to include groundwater flooding, contamination, insurance; drainage, flood insurance and the siting and design of new developments to adapt to flooding.<\/p>\n<p>The event is aimed at anyone with an interest in flood response and flood management programmes, including environmental lawyers, government advisers, Non-Governmental Organisations, academics, local authorities, businesses and students.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar has been organised by the Water Working Party of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukela.org\/rte.asp\">UK Environmental Law Association<\/a> (UKELA) in association with the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM). UKELA is a UK forum which aims to make the law work for a better environment and to improve understanding and awareness of environmental law.<\/p>\n<p>William Howarth is Professor of Environmental Law at Kent Law School and Joint Convenor of the Masters Programmes in Environmental Law and Policy, and International Environmental Law.<\/p>\n<p>He is author, co-author or editor of 14 books relating to fisheries and water law, including <em>Water Pollution and Water Quality Law<\/em>(2001); <em>Flood Defence Law<\/em> (2002); <em>Wisdom&#8217;s Law of Watercourses<\/em> (2011), and acted as consultant editor of the Water and Waterways title (2009) and the Environmental Quality and Public Health title (2010) in <em>Halsbury&#8217;s Laws of England<\/em>.
