{"id":4317,"date":"2019-07-09T14:31:47","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T13:31:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=4317"},"modified":"2019-10-08T15:53:36","modified_gmt":"2019-10-08T14:53:36","slug":"law-school-professors-awarded-11k-for-sls-annual-seminar-celebrating-legal-life-of-lady-hale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/law-school-professors-awarded-11k-for-sls-annual-seminar-celebrating-legal-life-of-lady-hale\/","title":{"rendered":"Law School Professors awarded \u00a311k for SLS Annual Seminar celebrating legal life of Lady Hale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kent Law School Professors Erika Rackley and Rosemary Hunter have been awarded \u00a311,000 by the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS)\u00a0to celebrate the legal life and jurisprudence of The Right Honourable The Baroness Hale of Richmond, as one of the Society\u2019s flagship Annual Seminars in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The two-day conference in central London will be will be a focus of celebrations to mark Lady Hale\u2019s retirement from her role as President of the UK\u2019s Supreme Court in January 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Over 50 leading academics, judges and senior members of the bar, from across the world, will reflect on Lady Hale\u2019s multi-faceted career as an academic, law reformer and judge. Sessions will address Lady Hale\u2019s important contributions to academic scholarship, the Law Commission and family law reform, access to justice and debates about judicial diversity. There will also be sessions organised around key themes of substantive law to which Lady Hale has made notable jurisprudential contributions including: family law and children\u2019s rights; human rights and the state; property and welfare; and equality and autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Rackley said: \u2018Lady Hale is one of the UK\u2019s most distinctive and influential judges. She has had a remarkable legal career. She has been at the forefront of legal changes which have affected the lives of millions of men, women and children. The conference \u2013 and subsequent edited collection \u2013 will identify and interrogate Hale\u2019s jurisprudence and legal life and will offer new insights into a life in law that has spanned over fifty years.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Papers from the conference will be published as an edited collection by Cambridge University Press.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/1235\/rackley-erika\">Professor Rackley<\/a> has research interests in law, gender and feminism, with a particular focus on judicial diversity and the nature of judging, feminist legal history and image-based sexual abuse. She co-led the <a href=\"http:\/\/womenslegallandmarks.com\/\">Women\u2019s Legal Landmarks Project<\/a> with Professor Rosemary Auchmuty from the University of Reading and collaborated with Professor Hunter and Professor Clare McGlynn (University of Durham), on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/fjp\/\">Feminist Judgments Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/1333\/hunter-facss-rosemary\">Professor Hunter<\/a>\u00a0has research interests in feminist legal scholarship, access to justice and family law. She recently completed a major research project on \u2018Mapping Paths to Family Justice\u2019 which investigated the operation and experiences of different forms of out-of-court family dispute resolution.
