Kent Law lecturer M\u00e1ir\u00e9ad Enright was invited to speak at a conference calling for a repeal of abortion laws in Ireland.<\/p>\n
M\u00e1ir\u00e9ad spoke at the Repeal the 8th Conference<\/a>, held in Dublin last weekend. Those who attended are among a number who believe The Eighth Amendment (which introduced a constitutional ban on abortion in Ireland in 1983) exerts a detrimental impact on women in Ireland.<\/p>\n The conference was organised as a first step in building a coalition of academics, legal experts, medical practitioners and activists to campaign for an immediate referendum to repeal the eighth amendment from the Irish constitution.<\/p>\n Following a review of the current situation regarding Abortion in Ireland, M\u00e1ir\u00e9ad spoke in a session focusing on Human Rights, Equality and the Law. Her talk is available to watch on YouTube<\/a> (in a video produced by Paula Geraghty of Union Solidarity International).<\/p>\n Earlier this year M\u00e1ir\u00e9ad was interviewed by The Guardian<\/em><\/a> following news that a woman had been legally forced to give birth by caesarean after being denied an abortion in Ireland.<\/p>\n M\u00e1ir\u00e9ad is a member of Lawyers For Choice, an organisation that works to decriminalise abortion in Ireland and increase access to abortion.
