{"id":4222,"date":"2019-06-03T12:52:29","date_gmt":"2019-06-03T11:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=4222"},"modified":"2020-02-06T08:31:29","modified_gmt":"2020-02-06T08:31:29","slug":"bumper-night-of-success-for-law-school-students-in-2019-kent-student-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/bumper-night-of-success-for-law-school-students-in-2019-kent-student-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Bumper night of success for Law School students in 2019 Kent Student Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was a bumper night of success for Kent Law School students at the 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/student\/kentawards\/\">Kent Student Awards<\/a> on Friday, winning four trophies &#8211; including \u2018Student of the Year\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Second-year Law and Criminology student Daniel Rozenberg was\u00a0named overall \u2018Student of the Year\u2019 at the Gala awards dinner on Friday.\u00a0Daniel won for providing free legal assistance to vulnerable people in the community. Daniel volunteers with the Young Lives Foundation, an independent children\u2019s charity based in Kent, to ensure that the legal process is followed when young people or vulnerable adults are in custody. He also works with the Domestic Abuse Volunteer Support Service to advocate for victims of domestic abuse in court. On top of that, Daniel is a caregiver for an elderly resident in Whitstable.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was also the winner of the trophy for making an \u2018Outstanding contribution to the local community\u2019. And final-year Law LLB student Alda Daci was one of three finalists within this category &#8211; she was recognised for raising awareness of refugees, leading many fundraising initiatives as President of the University of Kent branch of Student Action for Refugees, working with Migrant Help to offer advice, and planning English conversation clubs for language development.<\/p>\n<p>Second-year Law and Accounting &amp; Finance student Aarish Hyder was a joint winner with the Kent Caribbean Union for &#8216;Outstanding International\/Multicultural Initiative of the Year&#8217;. Aarish won for\u00a0his activism which contributed to a change in government policy, gaining an extension to the work-study visa, organising trips for international students and creating opportunities to learn about different languages and cultures.<\/p>\n<p>The team behind the Law School\u2019s \u2018Decolonising the Curriculum\u2019 project (DtCP) won &#8216;Outstanding contribution to equality, diversity and inclusivity&#8217;. The team has worked tirelessly to highlight the need for change in academic curriculums to ensure diversity and inclusivity. Team members include: Law School students\u00a0Ahmed Memon, Joy Olugboyega, Anthony Otobo Martins, Mekke Orie, Jasmyn Sargeant and Lisa Shoko working with\u00a0Wahida Ahmed (School of European Culture and Languages), Hezhan Kader (School of Psychology) and Abdul Khan (School of Physical Sciences). Final-year Law LLB student Anthony Otobo-Martins was also shortlisted individually within this category for raising awareness of the Decolonising the Curriculum project, volunteering on the Joint Enterprise Appeals Project to help wrongly imprisoned young black men, and working to counter income inequality by helping those faced with eviction notices.<\/p>\n<p>The winners were presented with a certificate and a trophy. They also win a brick in the University&#8217;s &#8216;Footsteps Path&#8217; and their achievement will be recognised on their Higher Education Achievement Report when they graduate.<\/p>\n<p>The awards are organised annually by Kent Union and the University of Kent to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution students make to the Kent student experience.
