{"id":4021,"date":"2019-03-21T10:46:06","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T10:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=4021"},"modified":"2020-03-20T22:49:49","modified_gmt":"2020-03-20T22:49:49","slug":"kent-students-win-prestigious-uk-canadian-law-mooting-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/kent-students-win-prestigious-uk-canadian-law-mooting-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent students win prestigious UK Canadian Law mooting competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A team of two Canadian students from Kent Law School have won the MacKay Cup, a prestigious UK Canadian Law mooting competition.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Status students Simona Petti and Manwinder Singh were awarded the trophy after beating a team from the University of Sussex at last night&#8217;s final held in the Bingham Room at Gray&#8217;s Inn, London.<\/p>\n<p>Simona and Manwinder advanced to the final from preliminary rounds of the competition held earlier this month. In the final, they competed as respondents before a panel of judges comprising\u00a0five legal professionals from Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Lecturer Johanne Thompson, Director of Admissions with Canadian Responsibilities at Kent Law School, accompanied the team to Gray&#8217;s Inn. Praising the strength of their advocacy skills, Johanne said: &#8216;Simona and Manni demonstrated an excellent ability to think on their feet in the face of fierce judicial intervention from the judges. They both remained calm under pressure, presenting well-considered answers throughout.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The MacKay Cup was launched in 2014 by the University of Leicester, with the support of Canada\u2019s then Minister of Justice and Attorney General, the Honourable Peter MacKay. It enables Canadian students who are studying in the UK to moot in Canadian law. Kent Law School Senior Status students Maariyah Baig and Keegan Adsett-Bowrin won the MacKay Cup in May 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst the MacKay Cup final was taking place in London, another moot in Canadian Law was taking place on Kent&#8217;s Canterbury campus. The\u00a0annual Justin Yuen Canadian Law Moot, organised by Kent Law School&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/kentcanadianlawsociety\/\">Canadian Law Society,<\/a>\u00a0was the third and final event held during Canadian Alumni Week. It was held in the Moot Court on the upper floor of the Wigoder Law Building. Respondents Nicole Bolick and Yasmin Abbadi were pitched against Appellants Abdul Javed and Sarah Guergis in a moot written by Law School alumnus <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ty__dennis\">Tyler Dennis<\/a>, now a real estate lawyer in British Colombia. The students, all\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/1386\/law-senior-status\">Senior Status<\/a> students, presented to a panel of judges that included Tyler, Kent Law School Emeritus Professor Nick Jackson and Deputy Mooting Director Darren Weir. Nicole was named best mooter, winning work experience with alumnus\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/justinwyuen.com\/\">Justin Yuen<\/a>, a Toronto-based criminal defence lawyer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2019\/03\/9bf9ad8f-8b86-47ea-b36a-f8051b938e2f.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4023\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2019\/03\/9bf9ad8f-8b86-47ea-b36a-f8051b938e2f-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2019\/03\/9bf9ad8f-8b86-47ea-b36a-f8051b938e2f-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2019\/03\/9bf9ad8f-8b86-47ea-b36a-f8051b938e2f-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2019\/03\/9bf9ad8f-8b86-47ea-b36a-f8051b938e2f-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2019\/03\/9bf9ad8f-8b86-47ea-b36a-f8051b938e2f.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The other two events held during Canadian Alumni Week were the annual\u00a0Kent Canadian Law Negotiation Competition on Tuesday and and a talk by Tyler on Monday.\u00a0Yasmin Abbadi, Peteche Bethell, Nicole Bolick and Payam Mozaffari participated in the Negotiation Competition, judged by Tyler, Professor Jackson and Johanne. Peteche was named as best negotiator. Pictures of all the events are available to view on the Canadian Law Society&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/canadianlawsociety\/\">Instagram account<\/a> and\/or on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/kentcanadianlawsociety\/\">Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kent Law School has a thriving Canadian student community and a growing network of alumni who have returned to Canada after graduation to qualify and practice.
