{"id":3955,"date":"2019-02-18T11:05:37","date_gmt":"2019-02-18T11:05:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=3955"},"modified":"2019-02-18T11:05:37","modified_gmt":"2019-02-18T11:05:37","slug":"dr-donal-casey-awarded-7-7k-for-research-into-role-of-test-houses-in-gambling-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/dr-donal-casey-awarded-7-7k-for-research-into-role-of-test-houses-in-gambling-regulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Donal Casey awarded \u00a37.7k for research into role of test houses in gambling regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kent Law School Lecturer Dr Donal Casey has been awarded close to \u00a37,700 for a pilot study on the role of test houses in gambling regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Casey secured almost\u00a0\u00a35,000 from Kent&#8217;s Social Sciences Faculty Research Fund and\u00a0\u00a32,700 from the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA) Research Grants Scheme\u00a0for his\u00a0project &#8216;The Glue that Keeps Compliance Stuck together: the Role of Test Houses in Online Gambling Regulation&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The money will fund\u00a0a pilot study which\u00a0will entail interviews with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk\/for-gambling-businesses\/Compliance\/General-compliance\/Technical-standards\/Test-houses.aspx\">test house<\/a> employees, regulators and operators in\u00a0England, Wales and Gibraltar.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2015 and 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/1219\/casey-donal\">Dr Casey<\/a> was a co-investigator in The Bingo Project, a research project funded by a \u00a30.5m grant from the Economic and Social Research Council that explored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/thebingoproject\/\">bingo regulation around the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Dr Casey was a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/2018\/12\/03\/dr-donal-casey-is-a-guest-editor-for-special-issue-of-journal-of-law-and-social-policy\/\">guest editor<\/a> for a special issue of the <em>Journal of Law and Social Policy<\/em>. The special volume &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.osgoode.yorku.ca\/jlsp\/\">Volume 30<\/a> &#8211; comprised 13 articles offering an interdisciplinary exploration of gambling regulation. The volume\u2019s introductory article, \u2018Keeping Chance in Its Place: The Socio-Legal Regulation of Gambling\u2019 was co-authored by Dr Casey, Professor Kate Bedford (University of Birmingham) and Dr Alexandra Flynn (University of Toronto). Dr Casey\u2019s article on \u2018Risk, Charity, and Boundary Disputes: The Liberalisation and Commercialisation of Online Bingo in the European Union\u2019 was also included in the volume. In it, he explores the diverse political-economic meaning attached to bingo and how this shapes the regulation of online bingo in EU Member States.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Casey\u2019s research examines transnational and non-state regulation. In particular, he is interested in how regulatory actors seek to legitimate their activities and how states and other actors govern through particular frameworks of risk.
