{"id":3739,"date":"2018-12-05T10:34:51","date_gmt":"2018-12-05T10:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=3739"},"modified":"2020-02-06T08:34:10","modified_gmt":"2020-02-06T08:34:10","slug":"kent-critical-law-society-annual-conference-2019-call-for-papers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/kent-critical-law-society-annual-conference-2019-call-for-papers\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent Critical Law Society Annual Conference 2019: Call for papers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kent Critical Law Society has issued a call for papers exploring the theme of \u2018Division, Difference and Democracy\u2019 and their relationship with the law in advance of its flagship annual conference in March.<\/p>\n<p>The one-day conference, organised by students for students, will be held in in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/maps\/canterbury\/canterbury-campus\/building\/grimond-building\">Grimond Building<\/a>\u00a0on Kent\u2019s Canterbury campus on Saturday 16 March.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s organising committee said: \u2018We presently face a volatile political atmosphere, both within and between nations. Now more than ever, we are witnessing division of a destructive nature spanning a range of vital issues: social disparity, economic injustice and environmental crisis. These trends are challenging our theoretical and political understanding of democracy; while at the same time, posing evermore complex questions as to how and whether democracy can overcome these divisions.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>A non-exhaustive list of possible themes for discussion at the conference include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brexit &amp; the European Union<\/li>\n<li>The Rising Right Wing vs The Fighting Left Wing<\/li>\n<li>Global Divergence<\/li>\n<li>Adaptation to Crisis<\/li>\n<li>Law &amp; Social Change<\/li>\n<li>Law &amp; Economy<\/li>\n<li>Gender, Sexuality &amp; Law<\/li>\n<li>Race, Religion &amp; Law<\/li>\n<li>Human Rights &amp; Progress<\/li>\n<li>Criminal Law &amp; Criminal Justice<\/li>\n<li>Technological Advancement, Power &amp; Law<\/li>\n<li>Immigration &amp; Asylum<\/li>\n<li>Environmental Law &amp; Climate Change<\/li>\n<li>Mental Health Law<\/li>\n<li>Legal Philosophy<\/li>\n<li>Legal History<\/li>\n<li>Division &amp; Time, Old vs New<\/li>\n<li>Properties of Difference, Public vs Private<\/li>\n<li>Reading Law through Literature<\/li>\n<li>Employment &amp; Labour<\/li>\n<li>Equity<\/li>\n<li>Media Law, the Social &amp; the Anti-social<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to student papers, the conference will host a number of keynote sessions (with keynote speakers to be confirmed in the new year).<\/p>\n<p>Papers (including interdisciplinary papers) are welcomed from students across all stages (undergraduate and postgraduate). Contributors are asked to submit an abstract of no more than 250 words, together with a short biography, to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:conferencekclsoc@kent.ac.uk\">conferencekclsoc@kent.ac.uk<\/a>\u00a0by Friday 8 February 2019.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a small conference fee to cover costs, refreshments and lunch.
