{"id":3557,"date":"2018-10-23T14:50:46","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T13:50:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=3557"},"modified":"2018-10-23T14:55:28","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T13:55:28","slug":"environmental-law-seminar-series-report-environmental-law-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/environmental-law-seminar-series-report-environmental-law-in-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Environmental Law Seminar Series report: Environmental law in action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kent Law School alumna Victoria Cherrier, now a principal consultant at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodplc.com\/\">Wood PLC,<\/a>\u00a0returned to Kent this month to deliver a talk on \u201cEnvironmental Law in Action\u201d for LLM students.<\/p>\n<p>The talk, held on Monday 15 October, was\u00a0the first for the Law School&#8217;s 2018\/19 Environmental Law Seminars Series.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria previously worked as a policy analyst at the Institute for European Environmental Policy\u00a0in London, where she focused on water and industrial pollution issues related to European legislation. In her new role at Wood\u00a0PLC\u00a0(formerly known as Amec Foster Wheeler), Victoria manages and delivers projects related to European environmental policy.<\/p>\n<p>Kent LLM student Vipassri Niyompruksa (who helped organise the seminar) said: &#8216;The seminar introduced insightful information for pursuing a career in environmental law and outlined EU\/UK environmental policy frameworks for environmental protection. Victoria drew on some practical examples on how her legal knowledge had been \u2018put in action\u2019. In this regards, she addressed the challenges of working with the United Nations, the European Commission, the UK and other European government departments to provide expert advice and establish environmental policy frameworks for air quality, chemicals, industrial emissions, climate change, water and waste. Victoria further exemplified some projects she had previously worked on for the European Commission such as a \u2018Water Reuse Impact Assessment\u2019 and an \u2018Analysis of Implementation of the Seveso Directive\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Overall, the discussion inspired attendees to gain a practical perspective on careers within the\u00a0environmental field and a useful overview of a broad range of environmental law policies for development and implementation in order to meet local and international standards.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><em>This month&#8217;s seminar was organised for LLM students by the student committee comprising Sara S\u00e1nchez, Pirunrak Siwarom and Vipassri Niyompruksa.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Environmental law at Kent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Environmental law is a recognised and long-established area of teaching and research expertise at Kent Law School. Academics, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Howarth,_William.html\">Professor William Howarth<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Hedemann-Robinson,_Martin.html\">Dr Martin Hedemann-Robinson,<\/a>\u00a0are engaged in research across a number of areas of environmental law, with research spanning international, European and national law and policy.\u00a0The Law School&#8217;s Environmental Law Seminar Series has been designed specifically for LLM (Master&#8217;s in Law) students with an interest in the environmental law modules offered at Kent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/327\/law\">Kent LLM<\/a>\u00a0students can graduate on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/130\/international-environmental-law-policy\">International Environmental Law\u00a0and Policy pathway<\/a> by (i) opting to study at least three (out of six) modules from those associated with the pathway of their choice and by (ii) focusing the topic of their dissertation on their chosen pathway.
