{"id":2779,"date":"2017-11-14T13:10:12","date_gmt":"2017-11-14T13:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=2779"},"modified":"2017-11-16T16:52:12","modified_gmt":"2017-11-16T16:52:12","slug":"public-engagement-project-to-consider-case-for-recognition-of-new-human-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/public-engagement-project-to-consider-case-for-recognition-of-new-human-right\/","title":{"rendered":"Public engagement project to consider case for recognition of new human right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kent Law School Professor, and Dean for Medway, Nick Grief, and Shona Illingworth of the School of Music and Fine Art, have been awarded \u00a31,500 from the University\u2019s Public Engagement with Research Fund (PERF) to consider the case for and against the recognition of a new human right.<\/p>\n<p>Their project, entitled &#8216;The Airspace Tribunal&#8217;, will\u00a0consider a new human right to protect the freedom to exist without physical or psychological threat from above\u200b. The PERF grant will support the project\u2019s first high profile hearing in London next year. This forms part of a major research project called <a href=\"http:\/\/thewappingproject.org\/commissions\/\">Topologies of Air<\/a>, commissioned by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thewappingproject.org\/about\/\">Wapping Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Airspace Tribunal will involve representations from diverse fields including international law; human rights; earth and life sciences; technology; cognitive neuroscience; cultural studies; sociology; art; architecture; politics; theology; philosophy; environmental studies; and economics. It will incorporate lived experience and NGOs, uniquely integrating public engagement and interdisciplinary debate.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2017\/11\/tribunal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2781\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2017\/11\/tribunal-300x154.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2017\/11\/tribunal-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2017\/11\/tribunal.jpg 410w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Grief,_Nick.html\">Professor Grief<\/a>\u00a0teaches Public International Law and EU Law at Kent Law School. His research interests include air and space law and human rights, especially the right to protest, conscientious objection to the payment of taxes for military purposes and the use of international law by protesters in UK courts. He also practises at the Bar from Doughty Street Chambers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/smfa\/staff\/staff-profiles\/fineart\/3Illingworth.html\">Shona Illingworth<\/a> is a Reader in Fine Art and an artist who works across sound, film, video, photography, drawing and painting. Major works using moving image and\/or sound, take the form of gallery based and site specific installation.
