{"id":2596,"date":"2017-09-12T13:48:20","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T12:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=2596"},"modified":"2021-03-26T13:35:20","modified_gmt":"2021-03-26T13:35:20","slug":"law-students-jet-off-to-japan-for-international-moot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/law-students-jet-off-to-japan-for-international-moot\/","title":{"rendered":"Law students jet off to Japan for international moot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three Kent Law students are jetting\u00a0off to Japan today, on their way\u00a0to compete in the 12th\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawasiamoot.org\/\">LAWASIA International Moot Competition<\/a>\u00a02017.<\/p>\n<p>Law students Maariyah Baig, Cara Hall and Keegan Adsett-Bowrin (pictured en route from two different airports),\u00a0are accompanied by Kent Law School\u2019s Deputy Director of Mooting Johanne Thompson and will be competing against 16 teams from China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. All teams will be tackling a complex <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawasiamoot.org\/pdf\/files2017\/mootproblem\/Moot_Problem_2017.pdf\">moot problem<\/a> concerning the termination of a partnership agreement originally drawn up to establish a multimillion dollar jade-mining business in Myanmar. Mooters will draw upon intellectual property law, international trade, commercial law and contract law as they seek to establish: the validity of the termination of the agreement; ownership rights of jade-mining machinery and equipment related to the business; and subsistence and ownership rights of bespoke business software. All parties will be working under the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration i-Arbitration Rules.<\/p>\n<p>The competition begins in Tokyo on Monday 18 September but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawasiamoot.org\/internationalrounds2017.aspx\">memorials<\/a> for both the\u00a0claimant\u00a0and the\u00a0respondent\u00a0were submitted by the Kent team in advance of their arrival. A final Award Ceremony to close the competition will be held on Thursday 21 September at the Hotel New Otani.<\/p>\n<p>The annual moot is organised by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawasiamoot.org\/\">LAWASIA<\/a>, an international organisation of lawyers\u2019 associations, individual lawyers, judges and legal academics in the Asia Pacific region; the chair of its Moot Standing Committee is Kent alumnus Raphael Tay, a partner at Chooi &amp; Company in Kualar Lumpur.\u00a0The competition is organised in conjunction with the LAWASIA International Conference and many of the conference delegates (who include legal advisers, attorneys and judges) act as moot judges.<\/p>\n<p>It is\u00a0the third year a team from Kent have entered the competition; in 2015, final year Law LLB students Orestis Anastasiades, Elena Savvidou and Lizzie Virgo secured a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/news\/index.html?view=1094\">top ten finish<\/a>\u00a0in the 10th LAWASIA International Moot Competition held in Australia; and in 2016, Melanie Lafresiere, Jas Cheema and Tom Bishop\u00a0competed in the 11<sup>th<\/sup> LAWASIA competition held in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p>Kent Law School runs an intensive and wide-ranging\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/undergraduate\/practical_legal_skills.html?tab=mooting\">mooting programme<\/a>\u00a0based in a purpose built moot room in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/wigoder.html\">Wigoder Law Building<\/a>; in recent years the Law School has entered teams in the: OUP\/BPP Moot; English Speaking Union Moot; Jessup International Law Moot; Inner Temple inter-varsity moot; Landmark Chambers moot (property law); inter-varsity medical law moot at Leicester University; Southern Varsity Shield; and inter-varsity Mackay Cup (Canadian Law).<\/p>\n<ul class=\"kent-social-links\"><li><a href='http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php?u=https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/law-students-jet-off-to-japan-for-international-moot\/&amp;t=Law students jet off to Japan for international moot' target='_blank'><i class='ksocial-facebook' title='Share via Facebook'><\/i><\/a><\/li><li><a href='http:\/\/twitter.com\/home?status=Law students jet off to Japan for international moot%20https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/law-students-jet-off-to-japan-for-international-moot\/' target='_blank'><i class='ksocial-twitter' title='Share via Twitter'><\/i><\/a><\/li><li><a href='https:\/\/plus.google.com\/share?url=https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/law-students-jet-off-to-japan-for-international-moot\/' target='_blank'><i class='ksocial-google-plus' title='Share via Google Plus'><\/i><\/a><\/li><li><a href='http:\/\/linkedin.com\/shareArticle?mini=true&amp;url=https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/law-students-jet-off-to-japan-for-international-moot\/&amp;title=Law students jet off to Japan for international moot' target='_blank'><i class='ksocial-linkedin' title='Share via Linked In'><\/i><\/a><\/li><li><a href='mailto:content=https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/law-students-jet-off-to-japan-for-international-moot\/&amp;title=Law students jet off to Japan for international moot' target='_blank'><i class='ksocial-email' title='Share via Email'><\/i><\/a><\/li><\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three Kent Law students are jetting\u00a0off to Japan today, on their way\u00a0to compete in the 12th\u00a0LAWASIA International Moot Competition\u00a02017.
