{"id":2406,"date":"2017-04-05T17:07:59","date_gmt":"2017-04-05T16:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=2406"},"modified":"2017-04-06T09:48:15","modified_gmt":"2017-04-06T08:48:15","slug":"professor-dermot-walshs-research-expertise-in-policing-called-upon-by-irish-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/professor-dermot-walshs-research-expertise-in-policing-called-upon-by-irish-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Dermot Walsh&#8217;s research expertise in policing called upon by Irish media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Dermot Walsh&#8217;s research expertise in policing is being called upon by the Irish media following the announcement of a major review of policing in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Walsh,_Dermot.html\">Professor Walsh<\/a>, Co-Director of Research at Kent Law School, has published widely on policing and criminal justice and is regarded as a leading expert in Ireland on the An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na or \u2018Garda\u2019, the Irish police force. This week, he was interviewed by the <em>Irish Examiner<\/em> in the wake of news that the Irish Government is to establish a new Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>In his interview for the newspaper, available to read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/ireland\/policing-body-must-find-why-force-is-prone-to-corruption-446941.html\">online<\/a>, Professor Walsh said the new commission should be \u201cwholly independent of government\u201d with an overall objective to establish \u201cwhy the Garda seems so prone to corruption, neglect, and inefficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Walsh\u2019s research expertise is often called upon by the Irish print and broadcast media; in February\u00a0he published an opinion piece in <em>The Irish Times<\/em>\u00a0on \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/dark-side-of-the-garda-will-persist-in-the-absence-of-radical-reforms-1.2978050\">the fundamental flaws in Garda governance<\/a>\u201d. He was previously interviewed by the <em>Irish Examiner<\/em> following the sudden departure of the head of the Irish police force and again when\u00a0the Irish Government decided to establish a new Policing Authority.<\/p>\n<p>The second edition of Professor Walsh\u2019s book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roundhall.ie\/navigateToUrl.do?idOfMenuItemToHighlight=catalogue&amp;actionToInvoke=\/displayProductDetails.do&amp;unitId=644571&amp;productId=644571\">Walsh on Criminal Procedure<\/a>, <\/em>was published by Round Hall at the end of last year. The book offers a comprehensive treatment of all aspects of criminal procedure in Ireland from police powers of investigation right through to post-sentencing processes.
