{"id":2249,"date":"2017-02-16T16:37:42","date_gmt":"2017-02-16T16:37:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=2249"},"modified":"2017-02-17T09:06:25","modified_gmt":"2017-02-17T09:06:25","slug":"free-public-talk-on-representing-marshall-islands-case-before-international-court-of-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/free-public-talk-on-representing-marshall-islands-case-before-international-court-of-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"Free public talk on representing Marshall Islands case before International Court of Justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Law School <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Grief,_Nick.html\">Professor Nick Grief<\/a> will reflect on his experiences of representing the Marshall Islands before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) when he delivers a free public talk and discussion in Canterbury next month.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Grief\u2019s talk on Tuesday 7 March, \u2018Beyond Law\u2019s Limits? Holding Nuclear-armed States to Account in the International Court of Justice\u2019, will examine a case he was involved in for the Marshall Islands. This tiny state in the Pacific Ocean, lodged applications in the ICJ against each of the nine nuclear-armed States, accusing them of violating international law by failing to pursue in good faith and conclude negotiations for the worldwide elimination of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>The talk is one of a number of free lectures organised by the Centre for Critical International Law (CeCIL) focussing\u00a0on topical international legal issues. The first in the series, held in November,\u00a0featured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Vigneron,_Sophie.html\">Dr Sophie Vigneron<\/a> discussing the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/countercurrents\/2016\/11\/03\/cecil-in-canterbury-lecture-series-begins-with-kent-law-schools-dr-sophie-vignerons-talk-on-the-destruction-of-cultural-heritage\/\">destruction of cultural heritage<\/a> for religious and\/or political purposes from the Byzantine era up to current events in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>A further talk on &#8216;Turkey&#8217;s G\u00fclenist Purge and the Defence of Human Rights&#8217; is planned for Wednesday 31 May. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Dinsmore,_Darren.html\">Dr Darren Dinsmore<\/a>\u00a0will discuss the state of emergency in Turkey. Amongst questions he will consider will be: the\u00a0limits States can place on human rights in times of emergency; the likely response of the European Court of Human Rights to Turkey\u2019s use of emergency powers; and the role of human rights courts regarding systematic violations of human rights.<\/p>\n<p>All the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/cecil\/\">CeCIL<\/a>\u00a0events in this series take place in The Friends Meeting House, 6 The Friars, Canterbury at 7pm (with tea, coffee and light refreshments available from 6.30pm).
