{"id":2157,"date":"2017-01-11T15:44:48","date_gmt":"2017-01-11T15:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=2157"},"modified":"2018-10-10T12:35:18","modified_gmt":"2018-10-10T11:35:18","slug":"law-clinic-event-to-demystify-family-court-proceedings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/law-clinic-event-to-demystify-family-court-proceedings\/","title":{"rendered":"Law Clinic event to demystify family court proceedings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An event to help demystify and explain family court proceedings for members of the local community unable to afford legal representation will be hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/clinic\/index.html\">Kent Law Clinic<\/a> on Wednesday 25 January.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be held in a replica court room (pictured) in the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/society\/11119\/new-kent-law-clinic-formally-opened-today\">Wigoder Law Building<\/a> on Kent\u2019s Canterbury campus and offers anyone expecting to be a \u2018litigant in person\u2019 an opportunity to experience what it feels like to attend court. It will also help to explain what is likely to happen at a family hearing.<\/p>\n<p>The Clinic\u2019s Family Law Solicitor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Bruce,_Philippa.html\">Philippa Bruce<\/a> has enlisted the help of a team of\u00a0local barristers, judges and representatives from the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cafcass.gov.uk\/\">Cafcass<\/a>) to offer general advice on how the court works.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Although it won\u2019t be possible to offer individual legal advice on specific cases, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the event aims to<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> address <\/span><span class=\"s2\">a broad spectrum of <\/span><span class=\"s1\">questions <\/span><span class=\"s2\">ranging from <\/span><span class=\"s1\">when to arrive at court<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> where to sit<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">to <\/span><span class=\"s2\">how to <\/span><span class=\"s1\">prepare, organise and present a case <\/span><span class=\"s2\">in the family court<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Philippa said: \u2018Representing yourself in family court proceedings can be very stressful and the court itself can feel like an intimidating place if you are unsure what to expect. Our aim is to help people gain knowledge and confidence.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Taking place from 5pm to 6.30pm, the event is open to all. If successful, the Clinic may organise similar events to help explain proceedings in the small claims court.<\/p>\n<p>Kent Law Clinic is a partnership between students, academics and solicitors and barristers in practice locally. It has two objectives: to provide a public service for local people who need legal advice and representation but cannot afford to pay for it, and to enhance the education of students at Kent Law School through direct experience of legal practice.<\/p>\n<p>People in the local community seeking advice on specific cases can book an appointment to attend a Monday evening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/clinic\/sessions.html\">Clinic Advice Session<\/a> staffed by volunteer legal advisors.
