{"id":1943,"date":"2016-09-30T15:35:19","date_gmt":"2016-09-30T14:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=1943"},"modified":"2016-09-30T15:35:19","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T14:35:19","slug":"dr-luis-eslava-speaks-of-transformational-process-in-colombia-ahead-of-national-plebiscite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/dr-luis-eslava-speaks-of-transformational-process-in-colombia-ahead-of-national-plebiscite\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Luis Eslava speaks of transformational process in Colombia ahead of national plebiscite"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kent International Law expert Dr Luis Eslava speaks of a transformational process happening in Colombia in an interview for online news magazine AlterNet ahead of the country\u2019s national plebiscite on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The plebiscite is being held to decide if the people approve the government&#8217;s peace deal with the rebel leadership of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).<\/p>\n<p>Dr Eslava, who is also an International Professor at Universidad Externado de Colombia, speaks of a \u2018process of great transformation\u2019 taking place in Colombia, affirming that the country is \u2018full of progressive energy\u2019 ready to be unleashed if the country confirms the peace agreements. Dr Eslava is interviewed for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/world\/50-year-civil-war-killed-over-250000-and-devastated-colombia-has-finally-reached-peace\">article<\/a>, \u2018A 50-Year Civil War That Killed Over 250,000 and Devastated Colombia Has Finally Reached a Peace Agreement\u2019, by <a href=\"http:\/\/internet2.trincoll.edu\/facprofiles\/default.aspx?fid=1000767\">Vijay Prashad<\/a>, George and Martha Kellner Chair in South Asian History and Professor of International Studies at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Professor Prashad is the author of the seminal books <em>The Darker Nations:\u00a0A People\u2019s History of the Third World<\/em>\u00a0(New York Press, 2007) and,\u00a0<em>The Poorer Nations: A Possible History of The Global South<\/em>\u00a0(Verso, 2012).<\/p>\n<p>Writing in a <a href=\"http:\/\/criticallegalthinking.com\/2016\/09\/29\/colombia-rubble-history-future-come\/\">post<\/a> on the same topic for the <a href=\"http:\/\/criticallegalthinking.com\/\">Critical Legal Thinking<\/a> blog, Dr Eslava says the plebiscite on 2 October is: \u2018a day when another Colombia and another world become possible. On 2 October 2016, a country of 48 million people will confront their own history.\u2019 He goes on to describe the plebiscite as: \u2018an incredibly important moment for current Colombia. This is a moment when Colombians can demonstrate to themselves that they are something different from which they have become after sixty years of civil war.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Eslava,_Luis.html\">Dr Eslava<\/a>, a Senior Lecturer in International Law, teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students at Kent Law School. He is also a Senior Fellow at Melbourne Law School, and Faculty at the Harvard Law School&#8217;s Institute for Global Law and Policy. He teaches and writes in the areas of International Law, International Legal Theory and History, Anthropology of International Law, Public Law, Law and Development, and Urban Law and Politics.
