First year law student Rayyan Sorefan is\u00a0one of two Kent students to win the People’s Choice Award\u00a0in the Virginia Tech KnowledgeWorks Global Student Entrepreneurship Challenge in the US.<\/p>\n

Rayyan, and\u00a0Politics student Cesare Dunker, won the $5,000 award with their idea ‘eLog’,\u00a0an app that seeks to\u00a0help\u00a0government departments process the asylum claims of groups of migrants more quickly and more efficiently; the app enables\u00a0migrants\u00a0to\u00a0provide evidence of\u00a0their\u00a0journeys\u00a0through the use of geo-tagging, photo-recognition\u00a0and\u00a0time-mapping. Not only does this mean that\u00a0governments can save money on processing asylum claims, they can also dismiss fraudulent asylum requests more easily.\u00a0In an explanatory video on YouTube<\/a>, eLog is described as ‘the world’s first company delivering humanitarian technological aid to refugees coming into Europe.’<\/p>\n

Rayyan and Cesare were\u00a0selected to represent Kent (and the UK) in the US competition after winning the University\u2019s Big Ideas Competition<\/a>\u00a0in May.\u00a0They pitched their winning idea at Virginia Tech University last week\u00a0(Thursday 18 August) along with teams from 14 other universities across the globe.<\/p>\n

Kent’s Director of Innovation & Enterprise\u00a0Carole Barron watched the live stream of eLog’s presentation at Virginia Tech. She said: ‘The two students were absolutely brilliant. They were confident, professional and responded to some challenging questions extremely well.’<\/p>\n

The Big Ideas Competition is run as part of HIVE<\/a> (the University\u2019s Hub for Innovation and Enterprise).
