{"id":1819,"date":"2016-08-05T08:40:36","date_gmt":"2016-08-05T07:40:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=1819"},"modified":"2020-03-20T23:05:06","modified_gmt":"2020-03-20T23:05:06","slug":"kent-law-students-jet-off-to-moot-in-sri-lanka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/kent-law-students-jet-off-to-moot-in-sri-lanka\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent law students jet off to moot in Sri Lanka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three Kent Law students are jetting\u00a0off to Sri Lanka today, on their way\u00a0to compete in the 11th\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawasiamoot.org\/\">LAWASIA International Moot Competition<\/a> 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Law students Melanie Lafresiere, Jas Cheema and Tom Bishop\u00a0are\u00a0accompanied by Kent Law School&#8217;s Deputy Director of Mooting Johanne Thompson. It is\u00a0the second year a team from Kent have entered the competition. Last year, final year Law LLB students Orestis Anastasiades, Elena Savvidou and Lizzie Virgo secured a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/news\/index.html?view=1094\">top ten finish<\/a> in the 10th LAWASIA International Moot Competition 2015 held in Australia in November.<\/p>\n<p>Melanie, Jas and Tom, all Stage 2 law students, were previously successful in applying for a grant of \u00a33,000 from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/giving\/opportunityfund\/projects\/index.html\">Student Projects Grant Scheme<\/a> to help cover travel costs for their\u00a0trip.<\/p>\n<p>Our\u00a0mooters will be competing against teams from\u00a0across the southern hemisphere, including\u00a0from China, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, and Thailand.\u00a0This year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawasiamoot.org\/pdf\/files2016\/mootproblem\/Moot_Problem_2016.pdf\">moot problem<\/a>\u00a0involves a complex dispute about\u00a0a breach of agreement for\u00a0the distribution and branding of tea.\u00a0Memorials for both the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawasiamoot.org\/pdf\/files2016\/internationalrounds\/1017-C.pdf\">claimant<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawasiamoot.org\/pdf\/files2016\/internationalrounds\/1017-R.pdf\">respondent<\/a> were submitted by the Kent team in advance of their arrival.<\/p>\n<p>The international rounds of the moot will take place\u00a0in Colombo\u00a0between\u00a0Thursday 11 August\u00a0and Sunday 14\u00a0August with a final Award Ceremony taking place on Monday 15 August.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Law School Associate Lecturer Dr Gauri Suraweerage-Nanayakkara will also be participating in the event &#8211; as one of the panel of judges.\u00a0Dr Nanayakkara is an accredited Civil and Commercial Mediator, a qualified Solicitor (England and Wales) and an Attorney-at-Law (Sri Lanka). She\u00a0previously worked as a State Counsel attached to Attorney General&#8217;s Department of Sri Lanka and as an Attorney-at- Law with Corporate Law Chambers in Colombo.<\/p>\n<p>The annual moot is organised by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawasiamoot.org\/\">LAWASIA<\/a>, an international organisation of lawyers&#8217; associations, individual lawyers, judges and legal academics in the Asia Pacific region; the chair of its Moot Standing Committee is Kent alumnus Raphael Tay, a partner at Chooi &amp; Company in Kualar Lumpur.\u00a0The competition is organised in conjunction with the LAWASIA International Conference and many of the conference delegates (who include legal advisers, attorneys and judges) act as moot judges.<\/p>\n<p>On its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LAWASIA-International-Moot-Competition-143882399114\/?fref=ts\">Facebook page<\/a>, the Moot Standing Committee says it believes mooting to be a critical component of legal education: \u2018Mooting offers a systematic training process of the essential skills of problem solving, legal analysis, drafting legal submissions and the development of public speaking.
