{"id":1795,"date":"2016-07-21T12:48:51","date_gmt":"2016-07-21T11:48:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=1795"},"modified":"2020-03-20T23:05:22","modified_gmt":"2020-03-20T23:05:22","slug":"students-enjoy-conference-exploring-migration-and-refugee-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/students-enjoy-conference-exploring-migration-and-refugee-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Students enjoy conference exploring migration and refugee law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students from across Europe enjoyed attending\u00a0a one-week conference exploring\u00a0migration and refugee law at\u00a0Kent&#8217;s Canterbury campus earlier this summer.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MigrationandRefugeeLawConference2016\">Migration and Refugee Law Conference<\/a>\u00a0was organised by Hannah Loosley, Sonia Soares and Saja Alserhan from the European Law Student Association (ELSA) Kent, one of six student law societies at Kent Law School. The historical and philosophical approaches of some of the academics that came were very compelling and they gave us insights on often neglected\u00a0concepts, which carry with them specific connotations, remnant of their historical evolving. Additional contributions included a talk by Caroline Browne of Samphire (a local charity supporting refugees) on\u00a0immigrant detention\u00a0and a talk by Alex Ntung, Head of Education at Charity Migration Help.\u00a0The penultimate day of the conference coincided with the announcement of the result of the Brexit referendum in the UK and a discussion of the impact of the results was led by a panel comprised of EU law experts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/alecs\/Kliem,_Tobias.html\">Dr Tobias Kliem<\/a>, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Grief,_Nick.html\">Professor Nick Grief<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Hedemann-Robinson,_Martin.html\">Martin Hedemann-Robinson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An accompanying social programme for the conference included a boat ride on the River Stour, a visit to Canterbury Cathedral, a trip to the beach at Whitstable and a final meal on the Friday evening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2016\/07\/Cathedral-visit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1798\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2016\/07\/Cathedral-visit-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Cathedral visit\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2016\/07\/Cathedral-visit-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2016\/07\/Cathedral-visit-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2016\/07\/Cathedral-visit.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2016\/07\/Monday-afternoon-showing-our-guests-around-Canterbury.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1800\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/files\/2016\/07\/Monday-afternoon-showing-our-guests-around-Canterbury-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Monday afternoon -
