{"id":1690,"date":"2016-06-09T14:15:09","date_gmt":"2016-06-09T13:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=1690"},"modified":"2016-06-09T14:15:09","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T13:15:09","slug":"expert-on-the-growth-of-prison-as-punishment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/expert-on-the-growth-of-prison-as-punishment\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert on the growth of prison as punishment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the world\u2019s leading anthropologists gives a guest lecture at the University\u2019s Templeman Library on Monday 13 June.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Didier Fassin, who will be a guest of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/socril\/\">Socril<\/a> (the Social Critiques of Law group at Kent Law School), will give a lecture entitled The Carceral Condition in a Punitive Time from 3-5pm in the Templeman Lecture Room. It is open to all and free to attend but booking is advisable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ias.edu\/scholars\/fassin\">Professor Fassin<\/a> is James D Wolfensohn Professor of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and Director of Studies at the \u00c9cole des Hautes \u00c9tudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>In his lecture, he will address questions about prison, which he says is a recent invention \u2013 hardly more than two centuries old \u2013 and which has become the universal system of punishment with an unprecedented expansion in most Western countries.<\/p>\n<p>Based on a thorough discussion of legal and philosophical theories of punishment, and on an ethnographic study conducted in a French prison over four years, Professor Fassin will explain the place that the correctional system occupies in contemporary societies.
