{"id":1673,"date":"2016-06-07T10:24:28","date_gmt":"2016-06-07T09:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=1673"},"modified":"2020-03-20T23:05:50","modified_gmt":"2020-03-20T23:05:50","slug":"law-students-can-apply-now-for-a-professional-mentor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/law-students-can-apply-now-for-a-professional-mentor\/","title":{"rendered":"Law students can apply now for a professional mentor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Law students seeking to pursue a career in the legal profession can apply now to be paired with\u00a0one of more than 100\u00a0mentors registered with Kent Law School&#8217;s Professional Mentoring Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to legal professionals working in the UK, the Scheme includes mentors based\u00a0in\u00a0Canada, Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, Malaysia, UAE, and the UN in Switzerland. \u00a0Mentors, many of whom are alumni, volunteer their time to help students develop their\u00a0understanding\u00a0of\u00a0the legal world and to navigate the application process for both work and study. They work with their mentees over the course of one academic year, from the beginning of the Autumn term until the end of the Spring term. Students benefit from expert advice on their CVs, mock interviews and assistance with applications. In a few cases, students have also been offered work experience.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the Scheme also hosts\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/news\/index.html?view=1166\">networking event<\/a>\u00a0in London where mentees have an opportunity to meet their mentors and to\u00a0develop their networking skills.<\/p>\n<p>The Law School&#8217;s Professional Mentoring Scheme was set up in 2011 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/giving\/lawcampaign\/people\/index.html?tab=young-alumni-fundraising-group\">Young Alumni Fundraising Group<\/a>.\u00a0Kent alumna Madelaine Power, a Barrister at 7BR who\u00a0was a founding member of the Scheme, said: &#8216;I started the Scheme by pestering my alumni friends to become mentors.\u00a0When I was a student I had no family or friends who worked in the legal sector. I felt like everyone knew lawyers except\u00a0me and had work experience and careers advice on tap.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I know the mentees have found the advice, support and often work experience invaluable. It is a clear demonstration that Kent Law School has trained, and continues to train, the very best and brightest who have gone on to be excellent lawyers and people willing to help others get a foot in the door.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Full details about the Scheme (and an application fo<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">rm) are available to students on Moodle (see: DP1950 Employability).\u00a0<\/span>The scheme is open to any student returning to Kent Law School in September 2016. Students are encouraged to apply early in order\u00a0to achieve the best match and international students seeking an international mentor are urged\u00a0to apply as soon\u00a0as possible in order to\u00a0be matched with a\u00a0mentor in advance of\u00a0the summer vacation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mentors wanted!<\/strong><br \/>\nStudent interest in the Law School&#8217;s\u00a0Professional Mentoring Scheme has now exceeded\u00a0the number of mentors available and we are keen to recruit new mentors from amongst:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kent Law School alumni<\/li>\n<li>The legal profession in Kent, whether qualified or not (regardless of where you went to University)<\/li>\n<li>Those working in careers which have links to the law such as journalism, Human Resources etc<\/li>\n<li>International alumni whom have returned to their home countries to work in the legal profession or whom have stayed in the UK to qualify. We have a particular need for mentors in Canada, Hong Kong and Nigeria.
