{"id":1413,"date":"2016-02-23T11:25:48","date_gmt":"2016-02-23T11:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=1413"},"modified":"2016-02-24T08:52:47","modified_gmt":"2016-02-24T08:52:47","slug":"legal-consequences-of-uk-exit-from-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/legal-consequences-of-uk-exit-from-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Legal consequences of UK exit from EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kent Law Clinic Director Professor John Fitzpatrick offered an insight into the legal consequences\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0UK exit from the European Union in a live interview on BBC Radio Kent last night.<\/p>\n<p>Drivetime presenter Dominic King began by asking\u00a0Professor Fitzpatrick to explain\u00a0how laws are currently made and to offer an\u00a0analysis of what advantages there might be in\u00a0having recourse to both\u00a0the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Fitzpatrick was also quizzed on\u00a0the\u00a0UK\u2019s membership of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and on the\u00a0implications\u00a0there might be for the\u00a0Human Rights Act, and\u00a0the law-making process\u00a0more generally, if the UK comes out of the EU.\u00a0Professor Fitzpatrick\u00a0made the point that the UK can choose to remain in the ECHR, even if it leaves the EU, but that there are some who are arguing to leave both.<\/p>\n<p>During the interview <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Fitzpatrick,_John.html\">Professor Fitzpatrick<\/a>\u00a0also\u00a0explained how a number of EU laws have already been integrated into the UK\u2019s domestic legal system (such as the Working Time Directive) and that it would be up to the government to decide whether such laws were maintained in the event of a UK exit from the\u00a0EU.<\/p>\n<p>Listen again <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p03j0hbk#play\">online<\/a>\u00a0(1:09:45 mins into the programme).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you registered to vote?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To be able to vote in the referendum on the UK&#8217;s membership of the European Union on Thursday 23 June, you need to be a registered voter.
