{"id":1044,"date":"2015-10-27T13:46:21","date_gmt":"2015-10-27T13:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/?p=1044"},"modified":"2015-10-27T14:25:49","modified_gmt":"2015-10-27T14:25:49","slug":"new-environmental-law-seminar-series-for-kent-llm-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/law-news\/new-environmental-law-seminar-series-for-kent-llm-students\/","title":{"rendered":"New Environmental Law Seminar Series for Kent LLM students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0new Environmental Law Seminar Series, organised and hosted by postgraduate taught students at Kent Law School, began this month with a presentation on policing environmental protection.<\/p>\n<p>The series has been designed specifically for students with an interest in the environmental law modules offered within the School&#8217;s one-year Master&#8217;s in Law programme, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/postgraduate\/taught\/index.html\">Kent LLM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first seminar, &#8216;Policing environmental protection and the European Union (EU): a case of supranational bite as well as bark?&#8217; was led by Law School Senior Lecturer Martin Hedemann-Robinson. Martin, a former legal administrator within the Environment Directorate-General of the European Commission,\u00a0provided an in-depth overview and critical reflection on the implementation and enforcement of environmental policies and legislation within the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Kent LLM student Jack Callaghan, who\u00a0organised the seminar in collaboration with\u00a0fellow students Inez Abeynayake and Claire Walls, said: &#8216;During his presentation, Martin argued that while it\u00a0was without doubt that\u00a0the approach to environmental issues\u00a0was more comprehensive than ever, the positive views of the state of environmental legislation within the Union as expressed by the current Presidency, do not accurately reflect the challenges facing the region.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/people\/academic\/Hedemann-Robinson,_Martin.html\">Martin<\/a> has recently completed the second edition of his\u00a0book <em>Enforcement of European Union Environmental Law: Legal Issues and Challenges.\u00a0<\/em>The book, due to be published by Routledge later this year,\u00a0examines the subject of EU environmental law enforcement. It provides\u00a0a detailed account of the various legal arrangements at EU level that may be used for the purpose of upholding EU environmental norms and assesses the practical impact of those arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>The next seminar in the\u00a0Environmental Law series, entitled &#8216;Thinking Globally and Acting Locally: Environmental Issues for Canterbury&#8217;\u00a0will be\u00a0held on\u00a0Monday 2 November\u00a0at 6pm in the\u00a0Law School&#8217;s Postgraduate Teaching Room. Visiting speakers\u00a0Emily Shirley and Geoff Meaden will\u00a0discuss local environmental concerns and their legal implications.\u00a0A further seminar, with guest speaker Liz Hiester and entitled &#8216;Environmental Law and Legal Practice&#8217;, will be held at 6pm on Monday 16 November in the same venue.<\/p>\n<p>Kent LLM Students can graduate with a specialism in either <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/postgraduate\/taught\/environmental.html\">Environmental Law<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/postgraduate\/taught\/intenvironmental.html\">International Environmental Law<\/a> by\u00a0(i)\u00a0opting to\u00a0study at least three\u00a0(out of six) modules\u00a0from those associated with the specialism of their choice and by\u00a0(ii) focusing the\u00a0topic of their\u00a0dissertation on their chosen\u00a0specialism.<\/p>\n<p>More information about environmental law research, events and academics at Kent can be found on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/envlaw\/index.html\">Environmental Law mini-site<\/a>.
