{"id":2333,"date":"2021-01-28T09:04:45","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T09:04:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/landodlatestnews\/?p=2333"},"modified":"2021-02-04T07:40:49","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T07:40:49","slug":"inclusive-allyship-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/landodlatestnews\/2021\/01\/28\/inclusive-allyship-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"Inclusive Allyship programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2334\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/landodlatestnews\/files\/2021\/01\/Ally-blog.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"243\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\">As part of the roll out of our Challenging Racism campaign, the <\/span><strong><span class=\"fontstyle2\">University of Kent<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"fontstyle0\">, in partnership with <\/span><strong><span class=\"fontstyle2\">Liverpool John Moores University <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"fontstyle0\">and <\/span><strong><span class=\"fontstyle2\">City, University of London <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"fontstyle0\">are working with Inclusive Employers to deliver a virtual, <strong>Inclusive Allyship Programme<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><br \/>\nThe <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\"><strong>Challenging Racism<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">programme aims to open-up channels of discussion and reflection around racism, as well as raise awareness and understanding around the challenges associated with ethnicity\/race, including an opportunity to become an Inclusive Ally. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\">The course is <\/span><strong><span class=\"fontstyle2\">FREE <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">and open to <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">all staff <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"fontstyle0\">from each partner University. This is a unique opportunity for staff to take part in a cross sector initiative and share their experiences with colleagues from other Universities. The programme<br \/>\nwill be delivered over a number of weeks (see dates overleaf), with the first of four virtual sessions <strong>taking place on 23rd<\/strong><\/span><strong><span class=\"fontstyle2\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">February 2021.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle2\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">Places on the programme are limited. <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">To register your interest <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">in this programme, please add yourself to the waiting list via <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">Staff Connect<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">. We will then contact you directly with further information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><strong>Inclusive Allyship Programme\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">Delivered by Inclusive Employers, the programme will take place over several weeks to allow for reflection and action between sessions. Each session will be <\/span><strong><span class=\"fontstyle0\">one hour long<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle2\"><br \/>\nIn between webinar sessions, delegates will complete a workbook with self-reflection activities supporting them to develop their self-awareness, consider their biases and identify areas for development. Allies will play a key role in supporting the University to advance its Equality agenda by linking with the staff networks, to support them with events and activities; be driven by Staff lived experience and expertise; and support various stakeholders across the University to drive a culture of inclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle2\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><strong>Aim of the programme:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle3\">\uf0b7 <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">Understand what makes an Inclusion Ally and how it relates to three key areas: values, behaviours and actions.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle3\">\uf0b7 <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">Explore privilege, circles of influence, and the boundaries of the role.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle3\">\uf0b7 <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">Explore frameworks and techniques to challenge exclusion and have challenging conversations.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle3\">\uf0b7 <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">Create an individual plan of action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle2\"><br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span class=\"fontstyle0\">Session 1 (Introductory Session) \u2013 \u201cWelcome to Allies\u201d webinar <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">(23rd<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">February 2021 \u2013 11am)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"fontstyle0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"fontstyle3\">\uf0b7 <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><strong>Values:<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">why are Allies important? \u2013 We\u2019ll take a look at the purpose of Allies at the University and the wider context, including anti-racism and structural discrimination.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle3\">\uf0b7 <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><strong>Behaviours:<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">how do Allies make a difference? \u2013 We\u2019ll discuss privilege and power and how this can be utilised to make the workplace more inclusive, identifying the boundaries of the Ally role.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle3\">\uf0b7 <\/span><strong><span class=\"fontstyle0\">Actions: <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"fontstyle2\">what do Allies do? \u2013 We\u2019ll look at specific projects and initiatives Allies can support,<br \/>\nand the actions they will be taking over the next 4 weeks<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><strong>Session 2 \u2013 The importance of courage in the face of discomfort <\/strong><\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><strong>(3rd March 2021 \u2013 2pm)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle2\">\uf0b7 <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle3\">This virtual learning session will address the topic of developing self-knowledge and courage to identify one\u2019s own bias (conscious and unconscious). This session will cover white privilege, white fragility and suggestions for unpicking the biases we soak up from the societies in which we live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><strong>Session 3 \u2013 Inclusive language and courageous conversations (19th March 2021 \u2013 2.30pm)<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">\uf0b7 <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle3\">This virtual learning session will focus on identifying and challenging exclusion and discrimination, including how to use the University\u2019s existing processes more effectively.
