The main aim of the trip was to look at the student Presidents Medals Award entries on show at RIBA, 66 Portland Place.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ksa\/files\/2015\/02\/IMAG2842.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-581 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ksa\/files\/2015\/02\/IMAG2842-300x170.jpg\" alt=\"IMAG2842\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ksa\/files\/2015\/02\/IMAG2842-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ksa\/files\/2015\/02\/IMAG2842-1024x579.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also on the itinerary were visits to: Sir Denys Lasdun\u2019s influential Royal College of Physician\u2019s, a mosaic-clad and arrangement of cantilevering concrete masses, contrasted by the ground-level black brick lecture hall; various permanent exhibitions at New London Architecture (NLA), including a scale model of London showing the new Cross rail layout; and a\u00a0visit to\u00a0Nicholas Hawksmoor\u2019s 18<sup>th<\/sup> C. St George\u2019s Church, Bloomsbury.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ksa\/files\/2015\/02\/IMAG2827.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-583 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ksa\/files\/2015\/02\/IMAG2827-170x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMAG2827\" width=\"170\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ksa\/files\/2015\/02\/IMAG2827-170x300.jpg 170w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ksa\/files\/2015\/02\/IMAG2827-579x1024.jpg 579w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ksa\/files\/2015\/02\/IMAG2827.jpg 1520w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the first half of the day being very structured, spontaneity\u00a0was factored in and students found themselves\u00a0wondering around the streets, stumbling across the occasional architectural gem, or not, in some cases!<\/p>\n<p>To finish the day off,\u00a0the group\u00a0popped into Southwark Cathedral and then visited The George, adjacent to the site of The Tabard Inn. This is where Chaucer\u2019s pilgrims started their journey, before leaving for Canterbury in the Canterbury Tales (this book forms the basis for MArch\u2019s Unit\u00a01 brief).<\/p>\n<p>All in all, the trip provided\u00a0students with an insight to the calibre of work expected at Masters Level and a range of historic buildings and their siting in London\u2019s distinctly diverse urban context.<\/p>\n<p><em>Robert Allcoat &#8211; MArch Stage 4<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday 30th January\u00a0Stage 4 students\u00a0visited London as part of\u00a0their Cultural Context module\u00a0led by Professor Gordana Fontana Giusti.
